Here’s some news we’ve been sitting on - Game Legal acted for and advised series co-creator, Octagon Australia, on the production of ‘RIVALS’.

This Sunday on FoxSports and Kayo, the age-old question of which is Australia’s ultimate sporting code gets an answer in the concluding episode of the new sports entertainment TV series, RIVALS -

The hard-working and creatively brilliant team of awesome people at Octagon Australia developed a fantastic project for their client. Well done, sincere admiration, and thanks go to the Octagon team. Many thanks again for your trust and teamwork - thank you also for your very kind testimonial.

While Australian audiences have consumed media over decades featuring athletes competing individually or in leagues and teams, RIVALS brings together professional male and female athletes from Australian rules football, rugby league, and rugby union to compete as teams representing their sporting codes across a series of challenges designed in consultation with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

This project for this client was the sweet spot of what I’ve been working on in the law for well over a decade. The work involved a case study of media agreements, sporting contracts, and a range of other issues. As a full service sport and media lawyer, I even packed 17 AFL footy balls in my luggage and hand delivered them to the set on location at Hamilton Island.

It was also great to work with the various project partners, suppliers, and of course the athletes and their agents.

Catch up and stream all previous 7 episodes today via Kayo.

Congratulations to our client on your upcoming Crowd-Sourced Funding campaign.

Game Legal recently advised and acted for ProVelo Cycling Group Pty Ltd on its corporate restructure, asset sale and transfer from ProVelo Super League Pty Ltd, capital raise, and its upcoming CSF round.

Private investment into sport organisations is increasing globally. From teams to entire leagues, sporting organisations are proving to be highly valued assets with corporate ownership, private equity investors, astute individuals, and celebrity influencers buying into the business of sport. Leveraging commercial acumen and removing the friction of the traditional federated sports model, private investment in sport may also apply agile and entrepreneurial thinking to unlock the full potential of the sport fan base.

Now crowd-sourced funding allows sports fans to own a stake in their favourite sport, along with voting rights and other elements of direct ownership.

Australian Peter Norman won silver in the 1968 Mexico Summer Olympic Games men’s 200m sprint race and wore the Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in support of fellow athletes John Carlos and Tommie Smith on the podium. Norman’s time that day still stands as an Australian record for the men’s 200m sprint.

It was Norman who suggested that Smith and Carlos share the black gloves used in their salute, after Carlos left his pair at the Olympic Village. Norman knew of the salute and said, ‘I’ll stand with you’. Carlos said he expected to see fear in Norman’s eyes. He didn’t; ‘I saw love’.”

Various accounts claim that Norman was shunned afterwards by the Australian athletics organisation and the Australian Olympic Committee. It was reported that Norman was not included or welcomed at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games unless he renounced his actions in 1968.

John Carlos stated that “If we [Carlos and Smith] were getting beat up, Peter was facing an entire country and suffering alone.”

Peter Norman was never fully recognised for his inspirational role before his untimely death from a heart attack in 2006 at the age of 64. Smith and Carlos attended Norman’s funeral and both gave eulogies and were Norman’s pallbearers. The US Track and Field Federation proclaimed 9 October 2006, the date of his funeral, as Peter Norman Day.

The Australian Government passed an official apology motion to Peter Norman for his treatment on 11 October 2012. The Australian Olympic Committee responded by disputing the claims made about Norman’s treatment.

Athletics Australia in partnership with the Victorian Government, erected a bronze statue of Norman to honour Norman’s legacy as an athlete and advocate for human rights on 9 October 2019 at the Albert Park athletics track, Melbourne. This statue of Norman in Australia was erected 3 years after a statue of Norman on the 1968 medal podium with Smith and Carlos was unveiled at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

⏰ When time is of the essence ⏰

In CAS OG 24/15 Federation Romanian Gymnastics and Ana Bărbosu v. Fédération Internationale de
Gymnastique (FIG) and Donatella Sacchi, CAS arbitrators have partially upheld the application and Ms Bǎrbosu is reinstated as the 3rd placed athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Gymnastics women’s floor exercise.

FIG is to determine the awarding of medals in that event in accordance with the CAS decision.

CAS arbitrators found that the inquiry submitted on behalf of Ms Jordan Chiles (USA) during the final was outside of the 1 minute deadline set out in art. 8.5 of FIG 2024 Technical Regulations (i.e. 1 minute and
4 seconds).

Interestingly, the Applicants requested a ruling adjusting the ranking of Ms Ana Maria Bărbosu, Ms Sabina Maneca-Voinea and Ms Jordan Chiles by placing all three athletes in 3rd position and the allocation of medals to all three athletes.
