Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, grandmothers, step-mums, carers and mother figures in our community. 🌸

In family law, we see every day just how much love, strength and sacrifice mothers give to their families — often quietly and without recognition.

Today is a reminder to slow down, feel appreciated and spend time with the people who matter most.

From all of us at Bryant McKinnon Lawyers, we hope your day is filled with love, laughter and maybe even a chance to put your feet up for five minutes. 💐

Funding your partner’s education will usually count as a contribution to the relationship and be factored into the property settlement balance sheet.

For more about the many types of financial and non-financial contributions that may be considered in property settlement, check out this episode: https://bryantmckinnon.com.au/family-matter/negotiation

🎉 8 years supporting our community 🎉

We’ve spent the last 8 years helping people through some of life’s most challenging times — always with dignity, respect and a focus on practical solutions.

We’re proud to still be the same team, doing what we do best.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us along the way.

There's no shame in not understanding your financial position when you decide to separate. But you do want to understand your position before negotiating a settlement. Ask questions. Get valuations. Insist on financial disclosure from your ex. You have a right to full disclosure.

For more on this and other questions coming from our community, check out episode 62 of our podcast, Community Questions: Take 9. Click the link below.

Emily is the first smile you see when you walk into our office.

If you’ve been in to see us before, it’s likely that she’ll not only remember your name, but the way you like your coffee!

Psychologist Warwick McClelland, who works with families navigating neurodiversity and trauma, says week-on/week-off arrangements can work — but only with strong consistency, planning, and cooperation.

In reality, that’s often hard for separated parents to achieve. Warwick encourages parents to recognise that 50/50 may not suit every child, and to be open to one home becoming the primary base.

We asked barrister Rhys O’Brien this question, and his answer was clear — no.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve reported the violence to police or have an AVO in place. None of that is required.

If you’ve been the victim of domestic violence, you’re entitled to include that information in your affidavit and your Notice of Risk.

To learn more about how the Family Court deals with domestic violence, listen to episode 52 of The Family Matters Show podcast: How the Court Deals with Family Violence.
