A new government emergency alert system is being tested in the ACT area at 10.30am on Wednesday 10 June (next week). The alert will be sent to some devices in the ACT and may cause a loud noise and vibrate even when devices are on silent or Do Not Disturb.

These alerts may expose the location or existence of safe phones or devices that form part of a safety plan for victim-survivors of family violence.

If you have a device you need to keep yourself safe, and receiving the alert may put your safety at risk, you can:
- Turn off your device or put it on airplane mode at least one hour before the test, and
- Keep your device off for 24 hours, as the alert could still be received if the phone is switched back on within that timeframe.

More information is available on the AusAlert website and at this page: https://www.ausalert.gov.au/community-resources/staying-safe-ausalert

If you need support for safety planning, please contact the DVCS 24/7 Crisis Intervention phone line on 02 62 800 900.

Please share this information with friends or family members who may need it.

For victim-survivors of domestic and family violence, navigating the justice system can be overwhelming at best. A domestic violence worker will be joining Canberra’s prosecutors to improve the support provided to victims and complainants as their matters progress through the criminal justice system.

One worker is a good start towards a more integrated support response for victim-survivors.

Can a child choose where they live?

There is no one answer. The law can definitely take into account the views of a child in working out their best interests however a lot will depend on that child’s age, maturity and development level, and whether their views have been influenced.

The views of a 13 or 14 year old are likely to be given more weight than the views of a 4 or 6 year old however the law will also consider the child’s lived experiences, irrespective of age.

Ultimately, while the Court may listen to a child's preference, this and a number of other factors may also be considered by the Court in working out a child's best interests.
