Mistake 2 – Outsourcing responsibility to the lawyer

This series explores the common mistakes separating spouses and their lawyers make that move them deeper into conflict instead of resolution. Through the lens of Kind Law, we look for what helps, what harms, and how we can do better.

Sometimes lawyers, despite often good intentions, unconsciously slip into saviour or soldier roles, fighting for someone instead of working with them.

A Kind Lawyer understands that we cannot do the emotional or moral labour for our clients.
But we can hold the space, steady and kind, while they do it.

Big news as our paralegal is now a graduate of anulawschool ! What an achievement. One step closer to being a lawyer!

On his first day back in the office we celebrated properly: flowers, chocolate, and Cliff Richard’s Congratulations on repeat… for 3 hours and 27 minutes 🎶

Some might say 3 hours and 27 minutes of Cliff Richard’s Congratulations is excessive. But don’t knock it til you try it 🎉🤣

Congratulations Vikram!!! 👏✨

Mistake 1 – Treating separation like a battle to be won

This series explores the common mistakes separating spouses and (and sometimes, their lawyers!) make that move them deeper into conflict instead of resolution. Through the lens of Kind Lawyering, we look for what helps, what harms, and how we can do better.

The courtroom lens teaches us that there are winners and losers.
But families are not armies. Every point scored usually comes at a cost, emotional or financial.

A Kind Lawyer reframes the goal.
Winning is not the aim. Resolution is.
And that requires curiosity, not combat.

We’ve seen so many clients at their lowest point emotionally at the beginning or in the midst of their separation journey. And we’ve also seen many of them after they’ve progressed through it in the months to follow. Individuals looking forward to their fresh start and future.

The end of a relationship can feel like a series of never ending suboptimal to bad days. But better and happier days are waiting for you. And we are here to help you get there.

Trust that your future will bring better days. Don’t let the bad days trick you that into believing it’s a bad life.

Make today epic, by trusting that you will get there, and that’s something to get excited about 🌈

As the day ends and everything goes a little quieter, we tend to think more clearly about the people we are responsible for - and what they might need from us later.

Done well, estate planning is an act of kindness.

It reduces conflict.
It removes guesswork.
It gives your family steadiness at a time when they will need it most.

January is a good time to do this, before life speeds up again and good intentions get overcome by all the busy stuff that tends to happen as the year digs in.

If you’ve been putting this off, consider this your sign, now is the time!

At BFL, we approach estate planning the same way we approach everything.
Thoughtfully.
Human-centred.
With balance.

If you are ready to start, we are here. Get in contact with Jono and Epi in our EP team ☺️

What a year for BFL…. Not quite what we expected but a constructive one, nonetheless. As we turned 6 we and # turned the corner towards 2026 we were pushed, prompted and gently (and sometimes not so gently) to reflect on why we started all those years ago in 2019.

We started with a goal of being a ‘litigation-lite’ practice, and we maintained this for a while before we gave in and brought in team members to build and drive our litigation practice. But, it never really felt ‘in synch’ with our founding intentions, so in 2026, we are:

💚Re-routing our litigation work and only taking on and retaining such matters where we can learn something new, or - it’s a special situation, client or the right thing to do. We will laser focus on doing what we do best: amicable separations, collaborative practice, wills and estate planning and launching soon… mediation!

🩵 Balance 2.0 has been a goal for a number of years and 2026 will see it happen. Winter will see the establishment of a presence in the Illawarra region and later Sydney. Watch this space!

💛 Don’t tell them - show them, right? And in 2026 in tandem with the growth of we will continue to reimagine and demonstrate how to do the law the kind way, which will tie in well goal 1. Matters approached the kind way, have kinder, less adversarial outcomes.

🩷When we started, we said “we weren’t going to break the mould, only to create another” and as 2025 progressed, we started to realise that unless we are clear, disciplined and focused, it’s easy to let things slip and end up doing exactly what we said we wouldn’t. As 2025 wrapped up, we let go and said good bye to what didn’t fit with our energy and vision, and we look forward to starting fresh and energised next week as our doors reopen…

Thank you to our wonderful team, colleagues, clients and supporters. You make it all worthwhile. We look forward to new adventures and growth in 2026 and beyond 💟

Let’s make 2026 - our lucky 7th year, the best one yet!

“We all think we’re trying to fix it.”

This series explores the common mistakes separating spouses and their lawyers make that move them deeper into conflict instead of resolution. Through the lens of Kind Lawyering, we look for what helps, what harms, and how we can do better.

Most separating couples do not set out to make things worse.

But in the fog of hurt, fear and ego, even good intentions can harden into habits that keep everyone stuck.

Kind Lawyering invites us to pause and ask:
Before we argue about who is right, can we look at what is happening?

Before we build a case, can we build understanding?
