We’re proud to have recently published the first installment of the sixth volume of JOLT. Delve into the latest on AI in Australian legal education and practice.

This issue features three groundbreaking articles…

✨The first article, The Dignity of Legal Education vs Artificial Intelligence in Australian Law Schools by Dr Raul Madden provides a philosophical interrogation of the tension between the moral purposes law schools have traditionally served, the financial realities they face, and the challenges and opportunities posed by generative AI.

✨The second article, The Evolution of Legal Knowledge Work in an Age of Brilliant(?) Technologies: From Robo-Lawyer to Digital Law Clerk by Professors Julian Webb and Jeannie Paterson, develops a groundbreaking novel taxonomy of archetypes in the legal profession which allow for analysis of emergent patterns of AI applications and their impacts.

✨The third article, The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Duty and Standard of Care in Legal Practice: A ‘Disrupting Moment’ for Laws that Protect Consumers from Economic Harm by Dr Catherine Brown OAM, Professor Sharon Christensen, Dr Brydon Wang, Associate Professor Amanda Stickley, Trent Candy, and Dr Rouhshi Low illuminates the limitations of current liability frameworks through employing an AI autonomy–human cognitive input spectrum.

The Australian National University Journal of Law and Technology (ANU JOLT) is seeking applications from students studying an LLB or JD at the ANU to join the team as Editors in 2025.

Founded in 2019, ANU JOLT is Australia’s leading academic peer-reviewed law journal that publishes high-quality works at the intersection of law and technology. JOLT is the ANU’s only completely student-run academic journal. JOLT generally publishes biannually. JOLT also organises events and other initiatives relating to law and technology. These include panel discussions, podcasts, career development sessions, social mixers and more.

Editors are responsible for taking charge of assigned academic manuscripts and reviewing them for spelling, grammar and AGLC4 compliance.

Editors may occasionally also help run and organise the non-academic elements of JOLT. This can include planning and managing events, leading social media engagement, engaging with stakeholders, finance and sponsorship and assisting the Editors-in-Chief as needed.

The time commitment for Editors may vary depending on the manuscripts needing to be reviewed and the publication cycle (hours may increase in the lead-up to publication in July and December). At a minimum, Editors should ensure time to attend fortnightly meetings with the JOLT team and 1-2 hours of editing per week. It is also encouraged that all Editors attend events hosted by JOLT.

Technical, STEM or previous editorial experience is not a requirement for these positions. What is required is a keen eye for detail, comfort with AGLC4, and strong writing and English language skills. An editing workshop will be run for all successful candidates in early 2025.

🔔 The ANU JOLT is delighted to announce the launch of our Volume 4, Issue 1, 2023. In this Issue, we are excited to present three meticulously researched articles, each offering a unique perspective on their topic. Read the Issue here: https://anujolt.org/issue/10486

✍️'Ensuring Location Data Privacy in Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs)' by Amy Dunphy: The author undertakes a comprehensive examination to analyse whether Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) location data will constitute ‘personal information’ under the Privacy Act 1998 (Cth) and proposes a law reform framework.

✍️ 'Online Service Providers in Choppy Waters: Time to Revise Copyright Safe Harbour Scheme in Australia' by Shahzeb Mahmood: The author argues in favour of amending Australia's Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) to afford safe harbour to intermediaries for third-party infringements.

✍️ 'AI, A Mere Capability or With Legal Personality: Inventorship in Patents Reimagined' by Ulrika (Yui Ting) Li: The author argues for legislative reforms in the Patents Act 1990 (Cth) to enhance the governance of patents in AI-generated outputs, including noting the important distinction between outputs which are created fully autonomously and semi-autonomously by AI.

This Volume is a product of 1.5 years of dedicated hard work, skilful editorship, and remarkable teamwork. Our robust and academically rigorous publication process has ensured a high level of scholarly and research excellence.
