Following the announcement yesterday that the state government would be demolishing the speedway at Granville, today Transport Minister Andrew Constance and local state MP Geoff Lee have announced that the Sydney Metro will compulsorily acquire the land in 2021 and hold a forum next month with Sydney motorsport organisations about a new speedway facility.

Statement: The NSW Government has today announced the building of a new home for speedway racing in Western Sydney which will ensure the sport continues throughout the transition. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said agencies across government will work together to build a new speedway facility, with a range of potential sites on the table. Crown land at Clyde is required for the Western Sydney Metro project, and the stabling of a new fleet of driverless metro trains. Western Sydney Metro West will link the Greater Parramatta and Sydney CBDs via a new driverless high capacity metro train. “The community and racing fans can be assured that the NSW Government remains absolutely committed to relocating speedway racing in Sydney,” Mr Constance said. “I acknowledge the long standing presence of the current Sydney Speedway and its significance to Western Sydney over the last 42 years. I am absolutely committed to ensuring that speedway racing has a bigger and brighter future in the region for decades to come. The NSW Government owns sufficient land in Western Sydney to accommodate a new speedway facility.” Acting Minister for Sport, Multiculturalism, Seniors and Veterans Geoff Lee said the speedway is very important to Western Sydney. “Generations of families have enjoyed speedway racing and thanks to the NSW Government they will be able to continue to do so at a new venue,” said Mr Lee.The land on which the Sydney Speedway is currently located is already owned by the NSW Government. Yesterday, Sydney Metro notified the Sydney Speedway leaseholder about the need for the site and Sydney Metro will continue to work with Sydney Speedway through the acquisition process. Sydney Metro does not need the land until 2021. The NSW Government will host a forum on November 15 with a number of motorsport organisations to discuss the potential masterplan of the new Sydney Motorsport Precinct at Eastern Creek.
