Who Can Still Apply for Another Student Visa Onshore?
CAN YOU STILL APPLY FOR ANOTHER STUDENT VISA IN AUSTRALIA?
Yes — but only if you fall within an exemption.
From 2 October 2026, current Student Visa holders may still be able to apply for another Student Visa in Australia if they meet certain circumstances.
These include:
✅You need up to 12 additional months to complete your studies and continue with the same education provider.
✅You are sponsored by DFAT or Defence.
✅You are applying to study a PhD.
✅You are applying to undertake primary or secondary school studies.
✅You completed your main course at an AQF level and are progressing to a higher AQF level.
✅You completed school studies and are progressing to a course that does not have an AQF level.
✅You completed a course without an AQF level and are progressing to a course that does have an AQF level.
✅You cannot continue your course because your education provider has defaulted.
Important: If you completed a higher education course, your next course must also be a higher education course delivered by a higher education provider.
Don’t assume you can simply extend or change your Student Visa while in Australia.
Your course progression and circumstances matter.
