Struggling with pain after an accident?
Early Pain Management Intervention = Better Outcomes + Better Claims Management
Yesterday we attended an excellent session delivered by Associate Professor Michael Vagg, Pain Medicine Specialist, thanks to Greg Freeman and MEDirect. His insights were a timely reminder that pain management is not an “add‑on” to personal injury claims — it is central to achieving meaningful recovery and reducing long‑term claim costs. And this is what claimants want, for their pain to go away!
A/Prof Vagg highlighted that when it comes to effective pain management early intervention matters. Something we strongly advocate for as it maximises better health outcomes for people injured in accidents.
He made some great insights into issues including
🔸 CRPS, considering both the Budapest Criteria and Valencia Criteria,
🔸 Biomechanical factors being far less predictive of long‑term outcomes than we once thought.
🔸 New driving theories impacting recovery which providers don't routinely screen for
🔸 The usefulness of the Orebro Pain Questionnaire; etc
Dr Vagg spoke to studies which demonstrated that proper early intervention for those with ongoing pain, results in better health outcomes and often overall lowers the cost of claims and treatment, when combined with
✔ Early pain management + psychological support
✔ Early GP recognition
✔ Early physio (within 7 days)
✔ Early/ no delays in approval of pain management rehabilitation as well as an helpful RTW coordination
It would be great to see this approach tested by insurers in Queensland when managing and approving treatment in claims, especially when it has the win-win for lower cost claims and better health outcomes for claimants, especially when it could help avoid reliance on opioid medication.
A/Prof Vagg also emphasised the importance of matching treatment to patient need, avoiding high‑risk interventions, and ensuring case managers don’t inadvertently slow down access to care.
This is the direction contemporary practice is moving — and it’s encouraging to see specialists like Mick Vagg leading the conversation. But it also involves multi-disciplinary approaches with GPs, psychologists, insurers etc.
Thank you Associate Professor Vagg and MEDirect for the educational session. It would be great to see more multi-disciplinary, early interventional pain management in our Queensland personal injury claims.
