Late last year, our office concluded a Walking Challenge, which served as a great opportunity to promote wellness, engagement, and teamwork.

Throughout the challenge, employees incorporated more walking into their daily routines. Some walked more during breaks, or outside of work hours, which demonstrated a strong commitment to health and wellbeing.

This initiative was thoughtfully organised by Dannielle Wood, an Associate in our Brisbane office, whose efforts and coordination were instrumental in its success. Thank you for your leadership and commitment to employee wellbeing.

Challenge Winners:
1. Diane Thornhill, Brisbane office
2. David Travis, Sydney Office
3. Maria Anderson, Brisbane Office

Congratulations to our winners, and well done to all participants.

Our Sydney Team came together last Christmas to organise a Christmas drive for Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Christmas can be a tough time, especially for children in hospital.

Maree Harris, Special Counsel and Team Leader of our Sydney office, organised the drive and also dropped off the gifts bought.

By organising gift donations, we hoped to bring moments of joy, comfort and kindness to the children and their families.

This Christmas 2026, our Sydney team plans on extending the Christmas drive.

We thank everyone who contributed.

For business advisors, accountants, and financial planners, succession planning is a conversation worth initiating with your clients. Business owners often focus on day-to-day operations, leaving long-term planning for “another time.” Yet, a well-prepared succession plan ensures business continuity and protects stakeholders.

Succession planning involves addressing complex issues:
🔹 Identifying and preparing successors
🔹 Minimising tax implications
🔹 Ensuring the business aligns with the owner's personal and family goals

By introducing clients to skilled estate and succession planning lawyers, you can add significant value and help secure their business legacy. Let’s collaborate to provide holistic support to your clients as they navigate this critical process.

EXCERPT

Put Up or Shut Up – Discovering and Disputing a Deceased’s Debts.

An executor or administrator of a deceased person’s estate (“LPR”) has a duty to pay all valid debts and liabilities of that deceased person. The LPR does not need to pay these debts personally but can instead use the deceased’s estate to make payment.

However, what if the LPR becomes aware of a debt after the estate has already been distributed? Does the LPR have to pay the debt in that case?

As a trusted advisor, you’ve likely seen the emotional and financial strain that can arise when a client passes without a valid will. A comprehensive and well-drafted will ensures their wishes are respected and reduces the likelihood of disputes, helping families avoid unnecessary stress.

Encouraging clients to create or update their will is a critical step in safeguarding their legacy. It’s not just about their financial assets—it’s about ensuring cherished family heirlooms and personal values are preserved.

By referring clients to a trusted estate planning professional, you can help them take control of their future and give their loved one’s peace of mind. A solid will is one of the most impactful gifts they can leave behind.

If you’re working with clients who need guidance on estate planning, let’s connect. Together, we can ensure their legacy is secure.

Why Keeping Your Will Updated is Crucial Before the Holidays and Travel
The holiday season is a time for celebration, connection, and, for many, travel. While it's a joyful time, it’s also the perfect moment to reflect on whether your will accurately reflects your current wishes.

Life changes quickly—new family members, shifting financial situations, or a move to a new home can all impact your estate planning. If your will doesn’t account for these updates, your estate may not be distributed the way you intend.

Travel, while exciting, introduces a small but important risk. In the unlikely event of an accident, an up-to-date will ensures your loved ones are cared for and that your wishes are clear.

This season, give yourself peace of mind. Take a moment to review your estate plan and please contact us on 1300 408 766 to facilitate any revisions you require. It’s a small task that can provide lasting reassurance.

EXCERPT:

One of the biggest concerns for many people when making an estate plan is the possibility of a family provision application (“FPA”). An FPA refers to an eligible person (such as a spouse, child or dependent) contests a will, seeking a larger share of the deceased’s estate if they feel they have not been adequately provided for. FPAs can be stressful, time-consuming, and costly for all parties involved.

In Queensland, these claims are governed by the Succession Act 1981, and while it is impossible to totally remove the risk of a claim, there are several steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of your estate being challenged such as making a clear and ‘fair’ will, communicating with your family and potential beneficiaries, reviewing your estate planning arrangements and considering a ‘no contest’ clause.

The Wills & Estates Transmission – Delving into the intricacies of Wills and Estate Law as our seasoned lawyers navigate the complexities of Estate Administration, Wills and Estate Planning, Estate Disputes and Litigation as well as such interesting matters as superannuation and burial disputes.

This episode on Charities includes these talking points:
• Leaving specific gifts in an estate and leaving charitable requests in a will. When leaving specific gifts, it is recommended to leave a percentage of the residue rather than a fixed sum of money, as the value of the estate may fluctuate.

• The importance of correctly identifying charities in the will, as different arms of a charity may have different taxation statuses. It is crucial to reach out to the charity to ensure the correct identification and to discuss any specific gifts that may require special arrangements.
