The central Victorian town of Ballarat has been named the 16th happiest place in the world by the 2026 Happy City Index.
The town, which is about 110 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, was ranked higher than Paris, Seoul, Singapore, and Amsterdam.
The Happy City Index assessed a total of 3,400 cities worldwide based on criteria including the quality of life, sustainability and long-term development strategies of a city.
The list was collated by urban consultancy firms the Paris-based Institute for Quality of Life and the London-based Happy City Hub.
This year, 251 cities have been narrowed down and featured on their list with Copenhagen snatching the number one spot.
The regional New South Wales town of Maitland managed to get the 34th spot, while Melbourne was given the 108th title.
Other Australian cities named on the list are Adelaide (71st), Geelong (133rd), Hobart (132nd), and Rockhampton (168th).
