From today, 10 December, major changes come into effect for how young people can use social media in Australia.

This isn’t a “ban on social media” for under-16s — but it does require age-restricted platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from creating or keeping an account.

That means:
• Platforms will be reviewing and removing under-16 accounts
• New accounts won’t be able to be opened
• Additional measures will be taken to detect users who may be under 16
• Parents and young people should expect noticeable changes in how these platforms operate

Over the coming weeks, we’ll break down:
✔ Which platforms are affected
✔ How platforms are enforcing the new law
✔ What parents should know
✔ What “reasonable steps” actually means under the legislation
✔ What happens to existing under-16 accounts

If you’re a parent, carer or educator, staying informed is key — and we’re here to help you navigate the changes with clarity and confidence.
