Big news for Queenslanders. The Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Bill, that allows Queenslanders to have a high-quality end of life, has passed. There are many things in the Bill to be discussed but it is due to take effect on January 1st, 2023. The Bill is a big step for healthcare in the state coming on the heels of Victoria and three other Australian states passing similar legislation.
Under the Bill, a person seeking the service must have an eligible medical condition and receive two assessments from independent medical practitioners.
The person must have an eligible condition which includes any medical condition that is:
- Advanced, Progressive and will cause death
- Expected to cause death within 12 months, or
- Causing suffering that the person considers to be intolerable.
An eligible person must be at least 18 years of age, fulfil residency requirements, be acting voluntarily and their decision-making ability must be intact. They must submit at least three separate requests – one in writing, which must be witnessed, and a further two verbal requests with strict time limits regarding the requests and the time frame in which they are given.
The person is then to be reminded at multiple stages that they are in no way obligated to continue the process.
Understandably this is a highly controversial issue throughout the state.

Sorry we are a little late on this weeks post but its a bit of a different topic and we wanted to make sure we were sensitive in our approach.

Separation and Divorce is an incredibly stressful time – for all concerned. The pathway ahead in a logical sense may seem out of reach or just too hard to find. Work, finances, and other commitments often leave little time left over to delve into what is already an often fraught situation. That’s where we can help. We can carry that load for you, and provide a clear pathway to an end goal. Our experienced and committed staff can help you manage the anxiety and risks involved through dispute resolution, Consent Orders, or other avenues. The human mind is a funny thing – and we often lurch into thinking about the worst scenario possible. Often this involves thoughts about Court. We can help you manage that risk, which is often a very small category of cases.

Buying and Selling homes is a huge decision with many different factors to consider.
Does the contract include pest and building inspection? Has the house been given council clearance as of being put up for sale? Is the shed that was set up in the garden a part of the contract? Are there any survey pegs on the property?
These are some of the very basic questions that our conveyancing team will step you through and help you with throughout the process.

Were you aware that due to COVID-19 there were a few amendments made to bankruptcy laws?

As of January 1 2021, you only have 21 days to respond to a bankruptcy notice, down from 6 months and the minimum amount of debt that can trigger bankruptcy is now $10 000. That’s just half of what it has been!

Ron Lawson Lawyer has dealt with issues in this field and we want to help you with getting through it in the best way possible. Minimising the negative long term effects of Bankruptcy and helping you get back on your feet, without looking for the emails from the Nigerian Prince.

Did you know that roughly half of all the sitting time in House is spent considering proposed new or amended bills? This means new laws and acts are passed almost every day!

At Ron Lawson Lawyers we have systems in place that automatically ensure we are always as up to date as possible.

With Covid-19 there have been adjustments and acts we have rarely used before being implemented and extended all the time. These include acts such as the disaster management act which has been extended 6 times since the Queensland government declared a state of disaster on the 22nd of March 2020!
