A guardian on paper doesn’t comfort a scared child.

Many parents spend time deciding who should permanently raise their children if something happens to them.

But what about the first few hours? The first few days?

If both parents are suddenly unavailable, who can immediately step in to collect the children, comfort them, and make decisions for their care?

This is why, at Just Wills, we help families consider both:

✔️ A Temporary Guardian – someone who can provide immediate care and support until longer-term arrangements are in place.

✔️ A Permanent Guardian – someone appointed to take responsibility for raising your children in the future.

Both roles are important.

Because protecting your children isn’t just about what happens years later.

It’s about ensuring they’re cared for from day one.

Many expats are unaware of what happens to their bank accounts after they pass away.

In the UAE, once a passing is reported, bank accounts are frozen as part of the legal process. This can apply to both individual and joint accounts, potentially leaving loved ones without immediate access to funds.

This is one of the many reasons why planning ahead is so important.

Having a registered Will in place can help streamline the process, provide clarity for your family, and assist in unblocking accounts as part of the estate administration process.

A Will isn’t just about distributing assets. It’s about making an already difficult time easier for the people you leave behind.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear:

“Muslims can’t create a Will in the UAE.”

This is not the case.

Muslims can create a Will through Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD), allowing them to formally document their wishes and put a clear succession plan in place.

When creating a Will, individuals can decide how they would like their estate to be distributed. However, if no Will is in place, the estate will be distributed in accordance with the applicable UAE laws.

Whether you have children, property, investments, or business interests, understanding your options is an important part of planning ahead.

If you’d like to learn more about creating a Muslim Will through ADJD, our team is here to help.

Last week, we had the pleasure of delivering in-person succession planning sessions for employees of Commercial Bank International (CBI) across both their Sharjah and Dubai branches.

The sessions were highly engaging, with thoughtful discussions and a wide range of questions from attendees looking to better understand Wills, estate planning, and the importance of planning ahead.

It’s encouraging to see more organisations across the UAE taking a proactive approach to employee wellbeing by including succession planning as part of the conversation.

A sincere thank you to the CBI team for having us. We look forward to continuing these important discussions and helping individuals gain greater clarity and confidence when it comes to protecting what matters most.

Many expats aren’t aware of this.

This can make it difficult for families to access funds at a time when they need them most.
