In commemoration of Cervical Cancer Awareness month, this January, Zigomo and Musarira Law would like to share this post with you all as a recap from our concluded hashtag Campaign held in 2024.

Dr. Chambati from Women’s Health touched on Cervical cancer and the importance of getting screened every two to three years.

Key points to note from his speech:
• Annually, over 2 000 women die from cervical cancer in Zimbabwe.
• Cervical cancer is Sexually transmitted via the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
• It is advised to conduct a Pap smear scan early, every two to three years.

Attending the 6th Privacy Symposium Africa (PSA) at the Holiday Inn in Harare from November 19-21, 2024, was an enlightening experience.

The symposium's focus on Election Data Governance highlighted crucial issues like data collection, processing, storage, and usage in electoral processes.

Critical legal discussions concerned regulatory frameworks, cross-border data transfers, and enforcement mechanisms across African nations.

Two standout speakers were Rumbidzai Matambo, President of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, who spoke about legal reforms and access to justice, and Drudeisha Madhub, Data Protection Commissioner of Mauritius, who emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to make data protection a reality in Africa.

The sessions were filled with insightful recommendations and solutions to data protection and privacy challenges.

🌸 🌸 The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign cannot be complete without special mention to Dr. Chambati from ,

who shared insights on three types of cancers, namely:

1. Breast Cancer

- It is essential to constantly self-examine our bodies for abnormalities and check for lumps while conducting regular screening.

2. Cervical cancer - It is estimated that over 2000 women lose their lives annually in Zimbabwe to cervical cancer. Thus, it is vital to get Pap smear scans done; the younger you are, the better, and it must be done at least every 2-3 years.

3. Prostate Cancer

-It is also essential to get screened for prostate cancer, especially after reaching the age of 40. They are conducted through a blood test.

The Breast Cancer Awareness campaign pointed out that Prevention is better than cure; thus, we are all encouraged to take care of our bodies by conducting regular checks for abnormalities and getting screened regularly. There is something that you can do; Cancer is not the enemy!

A CANCER DIAGNOSIS IS NOT THE END OF YOUR LIFE; IT IS ONLY FATAL IF TREATMENT FOLLOWING DIAGNOSIS IS DELAYED! 🌸 🌸

🌸🌸 Our Senior Partner, Ms. Rose Zigomo giving a legal interpretation of the new marriage Act which was enacted in 2022.

Noting the four main types of legally accepted marriages now :
1. African Customary law marriage - African traditional marriages that are polygamous
2. Civil marriage - marriage which takes place according to civil law and which are monogamous
3. Qualified Civil marriages - which are polygamous or potentially polygamous in nature and conducted according to religious rites
4. Registered customary law unions - marriages conducted according to African custom and are registered with the Marriage Bureau.

Ms. Zigomo also touched on relationships(not a marriage) that may exist between a married spouse and a third party and these are called Civil Partnerships. This law was introduced to provide protection to parties for the division or transfer of property rights. The law does not authorize polyandry.

All of the above unions are now covered by the Matrimonial Causes Act Chapter 5:13 on dissolution for the equitable division of assets. 🌸🌸
