The accrual system — it sounds complicated, but it's actually one of the fairest ways to structure a marriage. ⚖️

Here's how it works in plain language:

When you marry out of community of property WITH accrual, you each keep your own assets during the marriage. But when the marriage ends (whether through divorce or death), you share in the growth of each other's estate.

Example: If you started the marriage with R200,000 and your spouse started with R50,000, and at the end your estate is worth R800,000 and theirs is R150,000 — the accrual calculation works out who owes what to whom based on that growth.

It protects the spouse who may have earned less (perhaps because they raised children or supported the other's career) while still keeping finances separate during the marriage.
