Re: Cheers to a Year of Legal Access – Thank You!

Dear African Law Enthusiasts,

As the year draws to a close, we at AfricanLII want to take a moment to thank YOU – for an incredible year of growth, milestones, and shared passion for accessible legal knowledge.

Here’s a quick recap of what we achieved together this year:
> African Union Administrative Tribunal: We have digitised the Tribunal’s judgments covering the years 2015 and 2017 to 2024.
> COMESA Case Summaries: Now available for 17 key judgments handed down by the COMESA Court of Justice.
> More Than 270,000 Users: That’s over a quarter million legal minds (and curious citizens) making the most of our free platform.
> Highlighted Cases: We spotlighted pivotal judgments by updating our case indexes and adding the Legal Digest on the Maputo Protocol to our Collections.
> Celebrating National LIIs & Open Access: We championed open legal knowledge by joining forces with incredible partners across the continent to amplify access to African legal resources.

As we prepare to toast to a new year, we want you to know that none of this would’ve been possible without your engagement and support. You’re not just website users – you’re part of a movement breaking barriers to legal information.

Here’s to an even bigger 2025! May your holidays be filled with joy, rest, and maybe even some leisurely reading of Charters (we won’t judge).

Thank you for being part of the AfricanLII family.

Warm wishes,
The AfricanLII Team

On African Human Rights Day, let's recognise the crucial link between human rights and development in Africa. The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights emphasises that the right to development is an inalienable human right, enabling individuals and communities to participate in and benefit from economic, social, cultural, and political progress.

This right includes access to essentials like education, healthcare, food, housing, employment, and fair income distribution.

Achieving sustainable development goals in Africa requires significant investment. However, current economic projections fall short of targets set by the African Union's Agenda 2063.

Without accelerated progress, millions of Africans risk falling into extreme poverty.

Let's advocate for policies and initiatives that promote inclusive and sustainable development in Africa, upholding the right to development for all.

From seas to forests: African human rights in focus! 🌊🌳

Remember our post about the Lomé Charter and ocean rights? Today, we're diving into another crucial rights issue: indigenous land rights.

The Ogiek people of Kenya won a groundbreaking case in 2017, with the order for reparations handed down in 2022.

Key issue: Kenya's eviction of the Ogiek people from their ancestral land in the Mau Forest.
Court findings: Kenya violated Ogiek rights to land, culture, religion, and development. The Ogiek are an indigenous people with rights to their ancestral territories. Kenya failed to recognize Ogiek land rights and consult them on development projects.
Order: Kenya must take measures to remedy violations, including land restitution, and pay reparations to the Ogiek community.

Why it matters: This ruling is huge for indigenous rights and sets a precedent for communities fighting for their ancestral lands.
