On African Human Rights Day, let's recognise the crucial link between human rights and development in Africa. The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights emphasises that the right to development is an inalienable human right, enabling individuals and communities to participate in and benefit from economic, social, cultural, and political progress.

This right includes access to essentials like education, healthcare, food, housing, employment, and fair income distribution.

Achieving sustainable development goals in Africa requires significant investment. However, current economic projections fall short of targets set by the African Union's Agenda 2063.

Without accelerated progress, millions of Africans risk falling into extreme poverty.

Let's advocate for policies and initiatives that promote inclusive and sustainable development in Africa, upholding the right to development for all.

From seas to forests: African human rights in focus! 🌊🌳

Remember our post about the Lomé Charter and ocean rights? Today, we're diving into another crucial rights issue: indigenous land rights.

The Ogiek people of Kenya won a groundbreaking case in 2017, with the order for reparations handed down in 2022.

Key issue: Kenya's eviction of the Ogiek people from their ancestral land in the Mau Forest.
Court findings: Kenya violated Ogiek rights to land, culture, religion, and development. The Ogiek are an indigenous people with rights to their ancestral territories. Kenya failed to recognize Ogiek land rights and consult them on development projects.
Order: Kenya must take measures to remedy violations, including land restitution, and pay reparations to the Ogiek community.

Why it matters: This ruling is huge for indigenous rights and sets a precedent for communities fighting for their ancestral lands.
