He stood beside Martin Luther King Jr., inspiring thousands at the 1963 March on Washington. The Hazards of Plausibility

"Beware the temptation of plausibility—it lures the mind towards accepting unvetted ideas or thoughts.” -Anonymous

Hazard: A risk or potential source of harm.

Plausibility: Implied reasonableness. Thus the hazard.

Probability: Likely to be the case.

Absolute: Perfect, exact.

In a time and environment where information is abundant, the Plausibility Monster has become most dangerous. Without verification, plausible data and narratives are just that, only plausible. Too much information is no information. When most claims seem plausible, verification and analysis is critical.

The Hazards

The Illusion
Plausibility creates an illusion of reliability. Information crafted with just the right amount of detail and context can seem both familiar and believable, leading individuals to accept ideas at face value without sufficient verification. The danger lies in mistaking plausibility for veracity.

Amplification
Regardless of accuracy, algorithms favor content that engages users. Plausible misinformation can gain traction quickly.

Probabilities
Although plausibility and probability are conceptually intertwined, in practicality and reality the two often bear little relation to one another.

Consequences
When acting on information that is merely plausible rather than factual oftentimes the consequences are significant.

Plausibility
That which is plausible is equally not plausible, until commencement of the verification process.

Absolutes
Possibilities and Plausibilities are not absolute.
