WHAT IS THE PRICE OF A HUMAN LIFE WHERE POVERTY REIGNS SUPREME?

Nigeria is a deeply religious nation. Christianity and Islam are on every street, in every greeting, in every church and mosque. But underneath the prayers, something dark has taken over: survival at any cost.

Poverty has trapped most of the country. The World Bank says about 140 million Nigerians live below the poverty line. Over 80 million young people cannot find work. Every year, 1.7 million graduates leave school with no real jobs to go to. So they turn to whatever works.

In Lagos alone, 1.86 million men paid for s*x in 2024, spending ₦661 billion on what people call “hook-ups.” Seventy percent of the women selling s*x say they have no choice. It’s not immorality to them. It’s a job. It keeps them alive.

Then there are the “Yahoo Boys.” More than 81% of them are under 26, and 74% are university students. Romance scams alone have stolen over $1 billion from victims. Young Nigerians would rather risk prison than face an empty stomach. My friend always asks: what are the alternatives?

While the youth fight for scraps, the powerful chase bigger prizes. Transparency International ranks Nigeria 142nd out of 182 countries for corruption. The 2025 budget is ₦54.9 trillion, but most of it goes to running the government (₦13.64 trillion) and paying debts (₦14.32 trillion). Little is left to create jobs. Meanwhile, pastors also exploit the poor, demanding tithes and offerings while preaching holiness.

How do Nigerians live with this contradiction? How does a girl go from church on Sunday to a hotel room on the same holy day? How does a Yahoo Boy pray before a scam? How do pastors drive luxury cars while their members starve? And how do politicians swear by the Bible or the Qur’an, then steal public money without blinking?

The answer is simple: when hunger becomes your teacher, morality becomes a luxury. The student who cheats, the woman who sells her body, the pastor who lies, the politician who steals, they are all playing the same rigged game. The only difference is that the rich play with suits and microphones, while the poor play with their last shred of dignity.

In this Nigeria, an honest life costs too much. So we adapt. We exist. And we ask again: what is the price of one human life where poverty rules?

THE TIME IS NOW
A Message from Daddy Kris, Convener of Legal Supporters

My fellow Nigerians,

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo once said that we must do things differently. Hon. Ben Igbakpa reminded us that the best time to start anything is NOW. And as Shakespeare wrote, there comes a time in the affairs of men. Our time is now.

For far too long, we have condoned and chanted praises for people who not only do not know what they are doing, but also steal our common destiny, while we stand aside and watch. Former British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, said that for evil to prevail, righteous men do nothing. But as Okpa Arhibo sang, “Who will bell the cat?”

As we celebrate Easter, the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, I have decided to launch a movement to address these issues. I am no superman, and my resources are limited. But I have been challenged, cautioned, and motivated to step up. I am presenting Legal Supporters to everyone who cares about change.

Our mission is simple and direct: We will ask how we are governed, how our resources are managed, and how our resources are shared.

Legal Supporters is a movement of the people, by the people, and for the people.

To everyone who cares: you can register with us and be part of this movement. We will rely on you to tell us what is happening in your area, so we can raise the issue locally and globally. Reach out and join us.

To the perpetrators: it is not too late to repent. But do not attempt to dismiss us, because that would be a grave error in judgment. We are not out to fight you for the sake of fighting. We want to help you build a future you can be proud of.

Community resources must be well managed for the good of the community.
Anything less will be met with stiff resistance.

Let me be clear: when you divert resources meant for community development to build a cheap mansion or a hotel, and send your immediate family to study and be treated abroad, you are committing a crime against humanity. Your actions and inactions cause death, suffering, and sometimes starvation that leads to death. We are saying, it is time to do things differently, and that time is NOW

Legal Supporters is an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to fighting corruption and providing access to justice for individuals, groups, and communities. The organisation’s head office is located in the United Kingdom, and it maintains an additional operational office in Nigeria. Although Legal Supporters is primarily concentrated in Nigeria at the present time, it is out to serve communities around the world. Its daily work involves keeping a close check on government officials and oil companies that abuse human rights in any form.

The mission of Legal Supporters is to combat corruption at all levels, with a particular focus on government institutions and the extractive industries.

The organisation strives to provide meaningful access to justice for marginalised individuals, groups, and communities who might otherwise be unable to obtain legal redress. The organization works collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders. Legal Supporters, a new non-profit organisation established to eradicate systemic corruption through strategic legal intervention, today announces its official operational launch within Nigeria.

The organisation is founded upon the core principle that the law serves as the most potent instrument for ensuring public accountability and restoring justice. Its operational focus will consist of a three-pronged approach: investigating and exposing corrupt networks, litigating to hold powerful actors legally accountable, and advocating for the strengthening of Nigeria's legal institutions to prevent future abuses.

The profound and systemic challenge of corruption, defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain, continues to undermine democratic governance, distort fair markets, and perpetuate deep social inequalities, thereby eroding the foundational trust necessary for a just society. Legal Supporters enters this critical landscape with a clear and actionable mandate to translate legal principles into tangible outcomes.

The organisation's Executive Director, Ogbevire Christian Ashaiku (AKA Daddy Kris), stated, "The abuse of power entrusted by the Nigerian people constitutes a profound betrayal that demands a rigorous legal response. Our mission is to systematically dismantle the architectures of corruption by leveraging the courts and the rule of law, thereby transitioning from public outrage to concrete legal victories that reclaim stolen resources and reinforce institutional integrity."
