Applying for a visa to the UK involves several steps. Here are five key steps to guide you through the process:

1. Determine the Correct Visa Type:
- Identify the type of visa you need based on your purpose of travel, such as tourism, work, study, or joining family. Each visa category has specific eligibility requirements.
- Resources: [UK Visas and Immigration](https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration) website provides detailed information on different visa types.

2. Complete the Online Application Form:
- Fill out the appropriate online visa application form. Ensure all information is accurate and complete.
- Pay the visa application fee as part of this process.
- Resources: You can access the application forms on the [UK Government Visa and Immigration](https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa) portal.

3. Gather Supporting Documents:
- Collect all necessary documents to support your application. This may include your passport, financial statements, employment details, and accommodation information.
- Each visa type has a specific list of required documents, so check the [guidance documents](https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/visa-application-forms) for your visa category.

4. Attend a Biometrics Appointment:
- Schedule and attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). This involves providing your fingerprints, photograph, and possibly other biometric information.
- Resources: Details on biometrics appointments can be found on the [Visa Application Centre](https://www.vfsglobal.co.uk) websites.

5. Submit Your Application and Wait for a Decision:
- Submit your completed application and supporting documents, either online or in-person at a VAC.
- Wait for the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to process your application. Processing times vary depending on the visa type.
- Resources: Check processing times on the [UK Government website](https://www.gov.uk/visa-processing-times).

There were an estimated 118 million passenger arrivals from outside the Common Travel Area (CTA) in the year ending March 2023 (including returning UK residents). This was almost twice (+174%) as many as in the year ending March 2022 (43 million), when UK and global travel restrictions due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic were still in place.

The prospect of further airport chaos has been raised with a warning to the government that the e-gates system which automatically checks travellers’ passports is no longer reliable – following yet another nationwide meltdown.

Airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted and Edinburgh saw long queues and delays after the country’s Border Force passport e-gates were hit by a nationwide glitch on Tuesday.

Millions of people in the UK with physical immigration documents are being invited to switch to an eVisa as the government aims for a fully digital immigration and border system by 2025.

From 17 April, individuals in the UK with physical immigration documents will receive an email from the Home Office, inviting them to create a UK visas and immigration (UKVI) account to access their eVisa.

The rollout of digital status is the next stage in the government’s plan to digitalise the immigration system.

There are fears that more people will be separated by the introduction of a minimum salary level for those wanting UK family visas.

Families living in the UK and abroad have raised concerns about what new rules will mean for them as they try to reunite with foreign spouses.

In December, the Home Office, which says migration to the UK is too high, announced a package of measures to reduce net migration, following a spike in arrival numbers.

As of 11 April this year, anyone applying for a visa to bring a loved one from overseas must earn at least £29,000 per year.

A family visa is required for a British citizen or settled resident wanting to bring a foreign partner or spouse, and potentially children, to live in the UK together.

The minimum income required to sponsor a foreign spouse coming to the UK via the Family Visa scheme has now increased from £18,600 to £29,000.

The Government plans to increase this further, in stages, to £38,700 by next spring.

The minimum income requirement applies to the spouse already living in the UK.
