The Hon’ble Finance Minister Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman presented her landmark ninth Union Budget 2026–27 in a challenging global environment characterised by geopolitical volatility, supply chain disruptions, evolving trade alignments, and rapid technological transformation.
While sector-specific incentives have been introduced to support strategic industries, the broader thrust appears to be on incremental reform, stability, and administrative simplification rather than large-scale structural shifts.
On the Direct tax front, the amendments are largely rationalisation-oriented and procedural, aimed at enhancing clarity, reducing litigation exposure significantly, and improving ease of doing business. Certain substantive amendments have also been introduced, which merit careful evaluation from a compliance and planning perspective. While the intention appears to streamline the litigation, multiple retrospective amendments may reopen some settled positions with the passage of time.
On the Indirect tax front, Budget proposals reflect a comprehensive approach to: (a) Simplifying processes and reducing compliance burden; (b) Promoting trust-based systems and digital integration; (c) Supporting strategic sectors aligned with India's economic priorities; (d) Enhancing export competitiveness; and (e) Providing relief to common citizens through ease of living measures. These reforms position India's indirect tax system for a more efficient, transparent, and business-friendly future
Overall, the reforms seek to further streamline India’s tax framework, improve transparency, and reinforce a business-friendly ecosystem while navigating external and domestic economic pressures.
We are sharing our comprehensive analysis of the Budget and trust you will find it useful.
