An Analysis of Donald Trump

Donald Trump has returned to power, once again becoming the President of the United States.

I admire Donald Trump for his courage, intelligence, and persistence in the face of adversity. Despite immense opposition from the US establishment and significant personal challenges—including criminal convictions and the imprisonment of some of his followers—Trump has managed to maintain his influence. His resilience and ability to rally the support of ordinary Americans have ultimately propelled him to the presidency once again, an extraordinary achievement given the odds stacked against him.

However, my analysis of his leadership is not without concerns. During his previous presidency, numerous high-profile officials resigned, often citing disagreements with his policies or actions, many of which they considered unethical or potentially illegal. For example, former Defence Secretary James Mattis resigned over Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria, emphasising the importance of alliances and ethical governance. Similarly, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Chief of Staff John Kelly departed amidst tensions over their inability to align with Trump’s directives. These resignations underscored a pattern of discontent within his administration, where officials often found themselves at odds with his leadership style.

As Trump campaigns for another term, his rhetoric and recent actions raise serious questions about the future direction of American democracy under his leadership. In the past, he has made controversial statements, such as referencing leaders like Hi**er to underscore loyalty, which suggests a preference for absolute allegiance from his subordinates. This tendency aligns with broader concerns that Trump prioritises personal loyalty over democratic principles, fostering an environment where dissent is unwelcome.

If Trump remains in power, there is a genuine risk that his approach to governance could become increasingly authoritarian. His admiration for leaders like Vladimir Putin and his post-election appointments of individuals with questionable reputations point to a troubling trajectory. Such moves raise valid concerns about the integrity of any future administration he might lead.

In my view, Trump’s hunger for power is unmistakable. His actions suggest a willingness to bypass legal and ethical boundaries to consolidate his authority. This could transform American democracy into a pseudo-democratic regime, akin to Russia under Putin, where democratic structures exist in name only.

While Trump’s resilience and leadership qualities are undeniably impressive, his tendencies towards authoritarianism and his prioritisation of personal power over democratic values are deeply troubling. For those who see him as a champion of the people, it is vital to critically examine his actions and consider the long-term implications of his governance.

To believe that Trump has returned to power simply to serve another term is, in my view, naïve. I suspect he will seek to extend his stay in the White House indefinitely, following a path similar to that of Putin—though perhaps with less cunning.
