Advocates for Transformation attended the ceremonial sitting held in honour of Justice Zukisa Tshiqi on the occasion of her retirement from the Constitutional Court.

Kgomotso Nhlapo-Merabe, the Secretary General of Advocates for Transformation (AFT) National, delivered a tribute on behalf of the organisation, honouring Justice Tshiqi’s distinguished judicial career, her steadfast commitment to constitutional values, and her lasting contribution to the transformation of the legal profession and the judiciary.

Today, we celebrate the women in the legal profession, women who continue to prove, every single day, that brilliance knows no gender.Women who draft heads of argument with one hand and nurture families with the other. Women who carry the weight of boardrooms, courtrooms, communities and homes, yet still rise with grace, intellect and resilience. Women who are building the profession while simultaneously building nations.

The truth is that women have never lacked competence. What women have often lacked is access, opportunity and the deliberate opening of doors. Yet despite this, women in law continue to flourish, not because the journey has been easy, but because excellence has always been embedded in who they are.
Their presence in this profession is not symbolic. It is powerful. It is necessary. It is transformative.

May we continue to create spaces where women are not merely accommodated, but empowered to lead, to thrive and to occupy every room they have worked tirelessly to enter.

Happy Mother’s Day to all women in the legal profession. Your strength builds communities. Your wisdom shapes the future. Your courage continues to redefine justice itself.

As the Section 3 proceedings reach their fifth day, the significance of these proceedings and their impact on the future of transformation within the legal profession continue to be profoundly felt.

Over the course of the past five days, the Court has heard submissions engaging fundamental constitutional questions relating to equity, representation, and meaningful access within the profession. These proceedings have evolved into a defining national dialogue on the ongoing pursuit of transformation and the responsibility of legal institutions to reflect the democratic values of South Africa.

The Advocates for Transformation remain firmly engaged in these proceedings, steadfast in advancing a legal profession that is inclusive, representative, and aligned with the constitutional imperative of transformation. ⚖️
