🇻🇳 Here’s an up-to-date guide to the current visa categories and who they are legally intended for.

Starting July 1, 2026, two new visa categories were introduced into Vietnam’s immigration system. However, one thing remains clear: for most people, there are still only two realistically accessible visa options.

🧑🏻‍💼 Diplomatic visas (NG1–NG4) are issued to official delegations, diplomats, and members of international missions.
🕵🏽‍♂️ Work and business visas (LV1, LV2, LS, ĐT1–ĐT4, DN1, DN2, LĐ1, LĐ2) are intended for individuals working with government agencies, foreign lawyers, investors, and individuals employed by Vietnamese companies.
🧑🏼‍🏫 Student and media visas (DH, HN, PV1, PV2) are issued to students and interns, conference participants, and journalists.
👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏻 Family visas (TT, VR) are available for spouses and children of holders of work and business visas, as well as for people visiting relatives in Vietnam.
🗽 Expert visas (UĐ1, UĐ2) are the much-discussed new visas that came into effect on July 1. They are designed for highly qualified IT professionals, scientists, and their family members. Their purpose is to attract world-class specialists to Vietnam and they are not intended for regular expats or digital nomads. These visas are processed through ministerial approval requests—visa agencies cannot arrange them.
🗺️ Tourist visas (DL, EV/e-visa) are the only visa types that can be obtained without an invitation from an organization.

⚠️ All of the visa categories listed above, except for the e-visa and visa-free entry (for citizens of countries that have visa exemption agreements with Vietnam), require an invitation from an organization, as well as documents confirming employment, investment, or official status. In practice, it is nearly impossible to obtain these visas on your own without an employer, an investment project, or sponsorship from an eligible organization.

📌 Our agency is one of the largest visa agencies in Vietnam. We can help you obtain your e-visa quickly, accurately, and with full support throughout the entire process.

😌💊 NO medical declaration required: you can relax

So, it turns out there was no need to worry about everyone entering Vietnam having to complete medical declarations starting from July 1. Our predictions have been confirmed.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health has officially clarified that the new regulations do NOT introduce mandatory medical declarations for everyone entering, leaving, or transiting through the country.

A medical declaration will only be required if the Ministry of Health makes a specific decision to implement one — for example, in the event of a threat posed by a particular infectious disease. The authorities also confirmed that the website tokhaiyte.vn is not being used for this purpose, despite it being widely mentioned in recent days by bloggers and even by the airline VietJet.

So, as of July 1, nothing has changed for ordinary tourists: there are no mandatory medical declarations when entering Vietnam.

We closely monitor all changes in Vietnam’s immigration regulations and will be sure to let you know if any new rules are introduced.

New passport in Vietnam: which document should you use for a visa run?

One of the most common questions after getting a new passport is: which document should you use to leave and re-enter the country if your current entry stamp or visa is in your old passport?

Here are the most common situations.

🟢 Situation #1. You Have Two Valid Passports

For example, you received a new passport from a consulate, while the old one remains valid and contains your Vietnam entry stamp or visa.

If the old passport:
✅ has not been cancelled;
✅ has more than 6 months of validity remaining;
✅ has enough blank pages for additional stamps;
then the entire visa run should be completed using it:
• exit Vietnam;
• enter the neighboring country;
• exit the neighboring country;
• re-enter Vietnam.

In this case, the new passport is not needed for border crossings.

🟡 Situation #2. Your old passport has less than 6 months of validity remaining

In this case, you will need both passports.

The process is as follows:
• exit Vietnam using the document that contains your entry stamp;
• enter the neighboring country using your new passport;
• then use the it to obtain a new visa or re-enter Vietnam.

Important: you cannot leave Vietnam using the new document in this situation, because your entry into Vietnam was recorded in the old one.

⚠️ Exception — China via a land border
If you are traveling to China by land, the "exit with the old one and enter with the new one" approach does not work. Chinese authorities may accept a passport with less than 6 months of validity remaining.

🔴 Situation #3. Your old passport has been cancelled

If the passport you used to enter Vietnam has been cancelled, you will not be able to cross a land border.
You must contact immigration to transfer your entry information (entry stamp) to your new document.
This process usually takes several days and requires payment of a government fee.
In some cases, you may be referred to the airport to resolve the issue, but you should first check with immigration.

🟠 Situation #4. Your old passport has less than 6 months of validity remaining and you have not yet received a new one

In this case, a visa run through Laos or Cambodia is no longer an option.
Possible alternatives include traveling to China via a land border, or flying to China, the Maldives, Kazakhstan, Russia, or other destinations that are willing to accept travelers with this amount of passport validity remaining.

⚠️ Important: returning to Vietnam in this situation is only possible with a pre-approved e-visa.

📄 Does the Type of Visa Matter?

No.
The same rules apply whether you are staying in Vietnam visa-free, holding a 90-day tourist e-visa, a family visa, a student visa, or any other type of stay permit.
These requirements relate to your passport, not the type of visa.

❗️Important to Remember
📌 If your old passport has less than 6 months of validity remaining and you already have a new one, bring both documents with you.
📌 It does not matter whether you received your new (second) passport a week ago or two years ago.
📌 For land-border visa runs, the key document is the one that contains your most recent Vietnam entry stamp.
📌 You cannot leave Vietnam using a different passport if you did not enter Vietnam with it.
📌 If your old passport has been cancelled, the issue must be resolved with immigration before your trip.

💌 If you're not sure which situation applies to you, send us a DM — we'll help you figure it out before your trip 💛
