Melenni is speaking at The Modern Solo/Small Firm Conference! 🎤

On September 18th at Apella RTP in Durham, she'll be talking about developing a niche practice and referral network as a solo or small firm, basically everything we've learned building Balbach & Davenport from the ground up in a little over a year.

We'll cover finding your focus, building referral relationships that actually last, and turning that into a real long-term growth strategy. She's bringing the messy, honest version of how we got here, not just the highlight reel.

If you're a solo or small firm attorney thinking about narrowing your practice (or wondering if you should), come find me there. Would love to see you in the room!

Marriage equality is the law of the land. But equality on paper doesn't automatically mean equality in practice, especially when it comes to inheritance, parental rights, healthcare decisions, and protecting your family. LGBT couples and families face unique legal challenges that straight couples often don't think about. You need estate planning documents that protect your family in ways that mainstream "standard" plans don't address. Let's walk through what matters for LGBT families: parental recognition, inheritance protection, healthcare decisions, and the legal tools that keep your family safe.

You've been married before. You have kids from a previous relationship. Now you've remarried, and maybe you have new kids with your current spouse. Or your spouse has kids from a prior marriage. Either way, your family doesn't fit the traditional mold and that's increasingly the norm in America. Blended families are beautiful. They're also complicated when it comes to estate planning.

"I need a will" is how almost every conversation starts. But a will is one piece of a set, and the other pieces do work the will can't.

The will: who gets what, who raises your kids, who's in charge of sorting it all out.

The trust: controls timing, skips probate, keeps your business off the public record.

Powers of attorney: two of them. One for money, one for medical decisions. Both for while you're still here.

The living will: your end-of-life wishes, in your own words, so nobody has to guess.

Beneficiary designations: retirement and insurance. And fair warning, these outrank your will entirely.

Put together, the whole set says one thing: if something happens to me, here is exactly what should happen next. No guessing, no court, no family arguing about what you would have wanted.

Ready to build yours?

We're not going to pretend a long weekend is for estate planning. It's for sleeping in and eating something off a grill.

But hear us out.

The reason this never gets done isn't that it's hard. It's that it requires a specific kind of unhurried thinking that a normal Tuesday cannot provide. Who raises the kids. Who makes the call at the hospital. Who gets the house. That's not a lunch-break decision.

The thinking part takes about an hour. One evening, one conversation with your person.

Then you send us a message and we handle every piece of the rest. You don't fill out forms all weekend. That would be a genuinely sad way to spend a Saturday.

The best time to do this was five years ago. The second best time is Saturday.

If you couldn't speak for yourself tomorrow, who decides?

Almost nobody has an answer ready. That's completely normal and it's also exactly the problem, because the answer gets decided anyway. Just not by you.

Without a healthcare power of attorney, the hospital doesn't know whose call it is. Your family may genuinely disagree about what you'd want, and they'll be arguing in the worst week of their lives. Sometimes a court has to sort it out, on a court's timeline.

With one: a single person you chose speaks for you, and your wishes are already in writing.

It's one document. It takes one conversation. It's the piece of estate planning people skip and then regret hardest.

You got married without a prenup. Maybe it wasn't on your radar. Maybe you've experienced a major life change since the wedding. Maybe you’ve had an inheritance, a business opportunity, or a shift in finances. Or maybe you're a second marriage and things feel more complicated than you anticipated. The good new is, it's not too late. A postnuptial agreement (or "postnup") is a legally binding contract you sign after you're already married. It does the same things a prenup does, but it comes with some extra considerations. Let's walk through what a postnup is, when you need one, how North Carolina treats them, and what to expect.

Every August you update the emergency contact card, buy the folders, sign the field trip form, and somehow never once think about the paperwork that says who raises your kids if you can't.

Not a guilt trip. Genuinely, you're busy, and this stuff is designed to be easy to postpone.

But five questions, right now:

Is the guardian you named still the right person? Are the school's emergency contacts current? Can someone actually authorize medical care for your kid? Do your life insurance beneficiaries still make sense? Does your will say what you think it says?

If you hesitated on even one, that's not a failure. That's just information. And it's fixable, usually faster than you'd expect.

Congrats on the new name!

Now here's the unglamorous part nobody mentions at the wedding, the courthouse, or wherever you landed on this: your legal documents did not get the memo.

Still carrying the old name, probably:
· Your will and any trusts
· Life insurance beneficiary forms
· Retirement accounts and 401(k)s
· Financial and healthcare powers of attorney
· Bank and investment accounts
· The deed to your house

A mismatch between your legal name and your estate documents rarely matters...right up until it matters enormously, usually at the exact moment your family is least equipped to deal with paperwork.

This is a short conversation and a flat fee. Link in bio.
