In 2022, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court.

Prior to her appointment, she served as a federal public defender, a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, a U.S. District Court judge, and a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Her confirmation marked a historic milestone in the nation’s highest court and reflects the continuing evolution of representation within the judiciary.

Justice Jackson’s career embodies a commitment to public service, constitutional interpretation, and equal justice under law.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His death, captured on video, sparked nationwide and global protests calling for accountability and reform in policing practices.
In 2021, former officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd’s death.
The case prompted renewed national dialogue surrounding use-of-force policies, civil rights protections, and systemic reform within the criminal justice system.
The legacy of this moment continues to shape conversations about justice and equality under the law.

In 1946, U.S. Army veteran Isaac Woodard was assaulted by a police officer in South Carolina just hours after being honorably discharged from service in World War II. The attack left him permanently blind.
The officer was later acquitted by an all-white jury. However, national outrage over the case drew federal attention and marked a turning point in postwar civil rights advocacy.
The incident influenced President Harry S. Truman to establish the President’s Committee on Civil Rights and ultimately led to Executive Order 9981 in 1948, which desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces.
Woodard’s case became a catalyst for greater federal involvement in protecting civil rights.
