This is Vanessa Fuss (Me). I handle the business-y part of Affordable Estate Planning and the socials. I don't love taking posed photos, can you tell? But I do love writing captions.

When Chad and I got married, he never wanted to open his own law firm. He was happy pushing papers and going to court for someone else. But over the years, I told him to do whatever made him happy, and one day, this was it.

The business planning, branding, logo, posts, education sessions, slide decks, advertising, invoicing, and blogging are all collaborations I often imagine and bring to life.

This company started as a side gig. I was working for medium-sized businesses or schools, and Chad was helping out friends and family with their wills and trusts when he wasn't busy litigating. Then, we moved to Oregon, and my uncle was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Chad came to my family's rescue by working to get paperwork in place before he died and helping with the probate process after his passing. Unfortunately, my uncle spent his last few weeks going to the Social Security office, DMV, and other places rather than just enjoying his time with his family. But this experience was a turning point for us. It was an "Aha" moment that led to the creation of our law firm and to our dedication to serving families who have otherwise been overlooked and undereducated about the legal system.

Have you had to deal with probate or not having a Power of Attorney when you needed one? Did you know what to do, or were you learning as you went?

“We got engaged and bought a house in the same month… now what?”

First of all — congratulations! 🎉 Getting engaged and buying a home are two of the biggest milestones in life. It’s exciting, busy, emotional… and usually followed by about 47 trips to Home Depot.

But here’s something most couples don’t realize: buying a house together creates real legal and financial responsibilities. If something unexpected happened, would your partner automatically inherit your share of the home? Who could make medical decisions for you? What happens to your finances if one of you becomes incapacitated?

Many couples assume marriage alone solves everything. In reality, estate planning is what creates clarity and protection.

This is especially important if:
• one of you had assets before the relationship
• you have children from a previous relationship
• you’re not married yet
• you own property together
• you want to avoid probate in Oregon

A basic estate plan can include:
✔️ a trust
✔️ wills
✔️ powers of attorney
✔️ medical directives
✔️ guardianship nominations for future children

Estate planning isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about building a strong foundation for your future together — just like buying your first home.

You’re already planning a life together. Make sure your legal plan matches it. 🏡💍

Meet Chad Fuss, Esq., owner of Affordable Estate Planning

He looks happy because he is. After leaving the 9-to-5, "this is how it's always been done" law firms, he started his own. A law firm dedicated to helping regular families with affordable prices and understandable explanations for wills, trusts, Power of Attorney, probate, and more.

The firm was structured around the idea that everyone deserves to protect their family. It's not only our visions, but it's the way we live. Chad prides himself on being able to spend time with his wife and kids, enjoy his hobbies like making sourdough, meet clients where they're at (figuratively and sometimes literally), and make people feel at ease during difficult discussions about their family and possessions after they have passed away.

When it comes to estate planning, do you want a stuffy lawyer in a fancy office or a down-to-earth guy who will make sure you understand what you are getting and why you need it?

Owning a business is a huge responsibility, and planning for its future is just as important as planning for your personal estate. Without proper planning, your business could face operational chaos, financial losses, or even closure if you die or become incapacitated.

The first step is a business succession plan. This legal strategy outlines who will take over operations, how ownership is transferred, and what happens to profits or shares. You can use trusts, buy-sell agreements, or key-person insurance to protect the business financially and operationally.

A power of attorney for business matters is also essential. If you become incapacitated, this document allows someone you trust to manage contracts, finances, and daily operations without disruption. Similarly, incorporating business assets into your estate plan ensures that heirs receive ownership according to your wishes and prevents disputes.

By planning ahead, you protect your family’s financial security, preserve your business legacy, and avoid expensive legal battles. At Affordable Estate Planning, we work with business owners to create plans tailored to the unique needs of their business and family.

Don’t leave your business to chance. Schedule a consultation today and secure your business’s future, no matter what happens.

How Updating a POA Helped a Local Family Protect Their Assets

Meet the Johnsons (names changed for privacy). A few years ago, they thought they were too young to worry about estate planning. But after a health scare, they realized their old power of attorney documents were outdated and didn’t reflect their current wishes.

By updating their POA with our help, they could designate a trusted family member to manage finances and medical decisions if either spouse became incapacitated. Soon after, Mr. Johnson had an unexpected hospitalization. Because the updated POA was in place, Mrs. Johnson could handle bills, insurance matters, and communicate with healthcare providers without stress or legal hurdles.

This simple update saved the Johnsons money, prevented family disputes, and gave them peace of mind. Their story is a reminder: estate planning isn’t just for older adults—it’s a safety net for families at any stage of life.

Take a page from the Johnsons’ book. Review or update your power of attorney today—your family will thank you. Schedule your free consultation with Affordable Estate Planning.

“Can I include my pets in my estate plan?”

Pets are family—and yes, you can absolutely include them in your estate plan! A common way to do this is through a pet trust, which ensures your furry (or feathered!) friend is cared for financially if something happens to you. You can specify funds for food, medical care, grooming, and even designate a caretaker to ensure your pet lives comfortably.

Without a plan, pets can end up in shelters or with relatives who may not provide the care you intended. By including your pet in your estate planning documents, you can also prevent disputes among family members over who gets custody.

Even if you don’t want a formal trust, you can still name a guardian for your pet in your will and leave instructions for care. This provides a clear roadmap for your loved ones and ensures your pet’s safety and comfort.

At Affordable Estate Planning, we help clients create plans that include every member of the family—human and animal alike. Protecting your pets is just another way to show love and responsibility, even when you’re no longer able to care for them yourself.

Make sure your pet is cared for no matter what. Schedule a consultation and add them to your estate plan today.
