Black women experience maternal mortality at 3x the rate of white women. But the birth workers, doulas, and midwives closest to the crisis are leading the conversation, searching for answers their community needs.

Last week, over 80 grassroots allies from across the country gathered in Baltimore, Maryland, to reimagine a health system that actually works for all of us.

We spent two years building to this point -- having conversations with hundreds of people from every background and geography to learn what their communities need to be truly well. Now, our Powering Health Justice Blueprint, releasing later this summer, will share what we learned, define the areas we want to focus on, and lay out the steps to build power to win the change we need.

Last week's convening was the final step in this process, bringing together the people who helped us create this Blueprint for one last touchpoint before we share it with the world. Stay tuned for its launch!

14 years ago, Lalo marched for DACA. Today, he’s almost 40, with a family — still in limbo. Still can’t plan his life more than two years at a time. Still missed his daughter’s award ceremony because traveling isn’t safe.

The GOP just passed $70M for ICE and CBP instead of working on humane immigration policies that offer stability and safety.

He isn’t giving up.

“I’d rather live fighting for something,” said Lalo, reflecting what dreamers live with every day, but they deserve much more.

People said it clearly: this health system is profit over people. At the end of the day, it’s about who makes a dollar off our bodies, off our illness, not someone truly listening.

And the cuts started coming down, Medicaid recipients didn’t pretend the system was good, but we can’t destroy it while we have nothing to hold on to.
