Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless

Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless A Voice for Housing & Justice Volunteer attorneys conduct intake interviews and take responsibility for representation in cases requiring follow up.

The core of WLCH's work, through our Legal Assistance Project, is the representation of individual low- and no-income clients through a network of over 200 volunteer attorneys and legal assistants. Volunteers obtain clients on a referral basis or, most often, at one of seven intake sites run by WLCH at meal programs, health clinics, and day programs throughout the District. WLCH’s staff attorneys

provide advice and guidance on all volunteer cases. Volunteer attorneys participating in the Legal Assistance Project represent people on issues arising primarily in the following areas (no prior expertise is required): public benefits (e.g., Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income, medical assistance, food stamps and TANF); shelter and housing (e.g., shelter placement, conditions and expulsions, public housing, Housing Choice Voucher Program eligibility and terminations, and housing condition disputes); street rights; and consumer debt/credit. WLCH also works on such wide-ranging issues as the criminalization of homelessness, budget advocacy, and the social service safety net. WLCH staff and volunteer attorneys also provide significant advice and representation in connection with the following major initiatives, which have a systemic impact on programs and opportunities throughout the District:

Yesterday the court held that the National Guard could not be deployed in DC. While the order has been put on hold while the government appeals, we celebrate this victory today. Our legal services community will continue to support the Attorney General’s fight for Home Rule on appeal.

We are so grateful for the support of Dean Treanor over the years at Home Court! Of course, just because he isn't dean anymore doesn't mean he can't be on the Georgetown team!

We are proud to sign onto an amicus brief led by Washington Lawyers Committee and ACLU-DC supporting the DC Attorney General's lawsuit to stop the federal deployment of National Guard in DC. DC's 200-year fight for Home Rule is inextricably linked to the fight for racial justice.

Friends outside of DC, we need your help. We have no vote in Congress, yet some people in Congress want to write our laws AND they want DC to lock people up for being homeless. Tell Congress NO.

This Wednesday, amidst Trump’s military takeover of DC, Congress will discuss HB 5163, a bill that would put people in jail for 30 days or fine them $500 for sleeping outside in DC. Instead of making rent cheaper and helping people make ends...
