National Hurricane Preparedness Week is a reminder that protecting your home means more than stocking supplies or planning an evacuation route. It also means being able to prove you own it.

In Louisiana, inherited property doesn't come with automatic legal ownership. To document an inheritance, families must file a "succession," a process that can be costly and out of reach for low-income households with deep, multigenerational roots in their communities.

That gap in legal documentation can be devastating after a disaster, when proof of ownership is required to access recovery assistance.

Our grantee Southeast Louisiana Legal Services - SLLS is on the frontlines of this work, helping families secure the legal documentation they need before the next storm hits. Heirs' property and probate work has become a cornerstone of their disaster preparedness mission, ensuring that the families who have called these communities home for generations can prove it when it matters most.

Every year on May 1, Law Day offers a chance to reflect on the importance of the rule of law and strengthen our understanding of the legal system.

“The 129 nonprofit legal services organizations that LSC supports across the country are committed to this ideal: that justice should be accessible for those without the means to pay for it,” writes LSC Chair John Levi in his Law Day statement.

LSC's just-released report reveals how local laws shape who stays housed — and who doesn’t.

"The Effect of State and Local Laws on Eviction: Lessons Learned and Future Directions" synthesizes key findings from LSC’s congressionally directed, multiyear eviction study. It explores how eviction laws, court processes and access to legal services shape outcomes for tenants. The report also highlights innovative approaches civil legal aid providers are using to help keep families in their homes.
