How to Appeal Your Property Taxes in California
1. Review Your Assessment
- Check your Notice of Assessed Value mailed by your County Assessor.
- Compare the assessed value to your home's fair market value as of January 1 of the current year.
2. Deadlines
- Typically, you have from July 2 to November 30 to file an appeal.
- Check your local County Assessment Appeals Board for exact dates.
3. How to File an Appeal
- File an Application for Changed Assessment (Form BOE-305-AH) with your County Assessment
Appeals Board.
- Include supporting evidence such as recent comparable sales, appraisal reports, photos, or
condition issues.
4. What Happens After You File
- The Assessment Appeals Board reviews your case.
- If approved, your assessed value and property taxes are reduced.
- You may receive a refund for any overpaid taxes.
5. Tips Before You Appeal
- Consider requesting an informal review first.
- Gather strong evidence to support your case.
