The Science Behind Getting Chores Done

Chores don't have to feel like a slog. There's a brain science approach to making them manageable—dopamine pairing.

My personal hack? Sort papers with a show playing in the background. Low-distraction rewards work best—rewatch a show you've already seen, set a generous time window, and let the pleasure be the reason you show up. The progress is the bonus.

You can also try body doubling—call a friend to keep you accountable while you tackle the task together. Accountability plus companionship transforms tedious chores into something manageable.

The takeaway: don't wait until the chore is done to reward yourself. Make the reward part of the process.

When helping a parent downsize, the real work isn't about the stuff—it's about the emotions.

Recently, I had the privilege of sharing my personal experience helping my own mother downsize after a major life transition. What I learned through that process fundamentally changed how I approach every senior move and downsizing project.

Here are three lessons that matter:

1. Meet them where they are. Your parent may be grieving, afraid, or struggling with the unknown. Instead of pushing, listen. Sometimes a temporary solution—like short-term storage—gives them the breathing room they need to let go.

2. Support their autonomy. Ask questions instead of giving directions. "Tell me about this" or "How do you want your home to function now?" keeps them in control while you guide the process. Work in small areas so progress feels achievable, not overwhelming.

3. Respect the pace. What looks like clutter to you often represents identity, independence, and memory to them. Take photos of sentimental pieces, clearly define keep/donate/trash piles, and don't move too fast. When people feel rushed or overruled, trust erodes.

The biggest mistake adult children can make is moving too fast. The emotional aspects of downsizing require more care than the physical ones.

If you're facing this challenge with your own parents, know you're not alone—and professional help can make all the difference.

Declutter Your Desk & Reimagine Your Workday

Your desk is a mirror of your mind. When it's messy, decision fatigue multiplies; when it's clear, ideas can land.

Here are my top ten timeless tips for creating a workspace that works for you:

1. End each day with a 10-minute tidy. A "shutdown ritual" signals to your brain that work is done.
2. Keep a single notebook (digital or spiral). Capture notes, tasks, and random thoughts in one place to avoid "post-it sprawl."
3. Batch your work. Group similar tasks—calls, emails, writing—so your brain stays in one gear.
4. Tame your tabs. Limit browser windows to what you're actively using; bookmark the rest.
5. Use zones. One for deep work, one for admin, one for creativity—physically or mentally.
6. Honor your energy curve. Do your hardest work during your natural peak (for many, that's midmorning).
7. Practice "Inbox Zero-ish." Process emails in batches twice a day. Delete, delegate, or do immediately.
8. Bring beauty to your desk. A small plant, art, or photo keeps you connected to purpose.
9. Schedule screen breaks. Every 50 minutes, step away. Movement resets focus.
10. Digitize the piles. Scan or snap what you need; recycle the rest.

Your desk doesn't have to spark joy—it just needs to stop sparking chaos.

Reflection: How does your workspace help—or hinder—your best thinking?

Pay It Forward: Donate office supplies to local classrooms or nonprofits like LAUSD's School on Wheels or DonorsChoose.org.

How to Curate a Smaller Home You'll Love Forever

My mom, Carmel, has always loved beautiful things—beautiful furniture, beautiful coffee table books, beautiful handbags. But a few years ago, she had to make a difficult decision. She was in her late 80s, her partner had passed away, and she was moving out of her large house to be closer to me. She'd soon be living in a fraction of the square feet she was accustomed to. How would that work?

Looking back on that experience, I've learned so much about what it really takes to downsize with grace. It's not just about getting rid of things—it's about asking yourself: What do I need to thrive now? What brings me meaning?

One of the first things I advised was to recreate her favorite spot from her longtime home. We took pictures of everything around the place where she spent most of her time, so we could bring that feeling into her new space. And when moving day came, my sister walked with her around the house one last time so she could say goodbye to her gardens and favorite spaces.

The hardest part? Learning to let go of things she'd loved for so long. But she also knew she could trust me to make those decisions on her behalf. We gave away gardening supplies she'd no longer use, but kept her holiday decorations and all her photos—the things she really held in her heart.

When I walked into her apartment after the first week, it felt like her. It smelled like her—she always has potpourri and fresh flowers. The essence of who she was in a big house with lots of big, beautiful things continues to live and thrive in her new space.

That's the real goal of downsizing: a home that's smaller in square footage but rich in meaning.

The Power of a Single Song: Making Decluttering Less Overwhelming

Motivation is often the hardest part of tackling an organizing project. But what if the solution was as simple as pressing play?

Professional organizing expert Dr. Regina Lark shares her go-to method with Real Simple: the "Just One Song" rule. Here's how it works—choose one song and declutter or clean from start to finish. When the song ends, you're done (though you'll likely want to keep going!).

Why it works: "The method turns something overwhelming and undefined into something finite and structured," Dr. Lark explains. "A song has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Instead of facing an endless task, you step into a four-minute window of focus."

The science backs it up too. Music stimulates dopamine, which supports motivation and momentum. By pairing something that feels heavy—like decluttering—with something energizing, you lower the activation energy required to start.

Whether it's a show tune, a rock anthem, or a nostalgic favorite, find your song and transform how you approach organizing.
