Harper Lee Estate, Publisher Settle 'Mockingbird' Play IP Case

Harper Lee's estate and a publishing company have settled their dispute over a "To Kill a Mockingbird" play adaptation the estate allegedly licensed without authority, wiping a more than $2.5 million arbitration fee appeal off the books the day before their scheduled arguments at the Seventh Circuit.

I got that from Media & Entertainment Law360 written by Lauren Wood"

FYI - Writing a play without a license violates the copyright owner's right to create a derivitive work and the owner's right to perform the work. Get that license before you adapt...

Why? The copyright in a single original work carries with it a "Bundle of Rights" The bundle of exclusive rights granted by U.S. copyright law, also known as Section 106 rights, includes the right to reproduce the work, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, perform the work publicly, and display the work publicly. These five fundamental rights empower a copyright owner to control how their original creative works are used and can be owned and enforced separately.

And now you know.
