2026 SSD & SSI COLA Changes from the Social Security Administration
We want to share some important information about the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and other Social Security changes that will affect our clients in 2026. These changes come from the official Social Security Administration (SSA) fact sheet.
Here’s what you need to know:
Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will increase by 2.8% starting in January 2026. This means your monthly benefits go up in an effort to keep pace with inflation.
Average Benefit Examples (2026):
All disabled workers — $1,630/month (Your exact benefit amount will vary based on your individual Social Security record).
Earnings & Work Rules (Important for SSD & Retirement Benefits)
To earn one credit of coverage in 2026, you must earn $1,890 in Social Security-covered wages or self-employment income.
You can earn up to four credits per year — which totals $7,560 in 2026 for the maximum number of credits.
Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) for SSDI:
Non-blind individuals can earn up to $1,690/month gross monthly.
Blind individuals: $2,830/month. Earnings above these may affect eligibility for SSDI benefits.
Trial Work Period Threshold (SSDI):
The threshold to count a month toward the Trial Work Period is $1,210/month in 2026.
SSI Federal Payment Standards (2026):
Individual: $994/month maximum, an increase from $967 in 2025
• Couple: $1,491/month
Resource limits remain the same ($2,000 individual / $3,000 couple).
What This Means for You
Your monthly benefit amounts will rise in 2026 thanks to the COLA.
Beneficiaries can still work, but earnings above certain limits could affect disability benefits.
If you’re working toward qualifying for Social Security retirement or disability benefits, earning $7,560 or more in 2026 will give you the maximum four work credits.
You can view your updated benefit amount online through your mySocialSecurity account at ssa.gov/myaccount once the SSA begins sending notices in December.
We’re here to help you understand these changes — feel free to reach out with questions.

If you've noticed longer lines or hold times when contacting your local Social Security office, you're not alone. Recent nationwide changes aimed at improving the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) main phone line have pulled about 4% of local office staff away from in-person and local phone service.

To make matters more difficult, the SSA has lost over 4,600 employees since March, slowing down the processing of claims and decision-making for all of Social Security's benefits.

Unfortunately, these staffing changes are expected to continue, which means delays at local offices may only get worse in the months ahead.

If you're having trouble navigating your claim, our office is here to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re committed to guiding you through the process as efficiently as possible.

The Social Security Administration reassigned some field office employees in an effort to bring down lengthy phone wait times. But workers say these reassignments have been disruptive for staff.
