Personal weakness and an inability to self-regulate lie at the core of a narcissistic personality. Rather than regulating themselves normally, a highly narcissistic person desperately tries to regulate everything and everyone around them, including attempting to tightly manage their image in the eyes of people nearest to them. If smearing their own child appears to deflect from their flaws and wrong behavior, they won’t hesitate. Ironically, what narcissists want more than anything are esteem, respect, and admiration, but their inability to manage themselves results in the deprivation of the very things they want.

Nothing screams, “I hate my ex more than I love my child!” louder than this, and the child hears it. So don’t be baffled when that child goes no contact. This isn’t confusing. No mystery here.

. . . AND, you can be sure they’ve already told themselves (and others) a story in which their poor choices and bad behaviors are justified, maybe even “necessary,” or not a big deal. Character disordered people exhibit distorted perception and cognition, and they measure the world with a very different yardstick than you do. They don’t value what you value, or what MOST people value. No amount of explaining to them how sh*tty or hurtful they are will result in them seeing it or caring about it. Stop trying. Stop talking to these kinds of people!

You’ll notice that highly narcissistic people represent that they know their children well - perhaps better than you - and yet they don’t seem to know who their children truly are and are often extremely out of touch with their children’s needs. I will let a diagnosed narcissist explain this

A narcissistic parent will shame their child for asking for his needs to be met, because the narcissist values others as useful tools - like a pawn or two-dimensional cardboard cut-out - and the narcissist resents the imposition of having to meet the emotional needs of their pawn. A narcissistic parent will also shame a child for marring the parent’s image - the choice, for example, to live with the other parent, to attend therapy for mental health struggles, to skip the narcissistic parent’s second wedding, to not play the parent’s favorite sport, or to fail in looking like a “loyal child” in front of family members. This reveals the shallowness of a narcissistic parent’s values and the instrumental relationships they have with everyone, including their children.

I work with many clients whose co-parents are what I call an “entitled deadbeat.” They want control without performing actual parenting. They want to check out emotionally and avoid the thoughtful work of helping a child grow into an adult. They want to avoid the tedious work of shuttling kids to appointments or researching child therapists, while also barking orders, demanding information, and meddling in every decision. There are smart ways to handle these folks.

I teach people strategies for spending the minimum on mediation fees and for getting the most out of mandatory mediation.

In healthy families, concern is intended to be warm, supportive, protective, or encouraging.
But in narcissistic or dysfunctional family systems, expressions of “concern” can become a socially acceptable mask for criticism, contempt, or attempts to diminish your potential or success.
It can sound like:
* “I’m concerned for you.”
* “Your choices just seem sad.”
* “You’ve changed. I don’t know what happened to you.”
The giveaway is that the comment feels...off. It’s odd, misplaced, or strangely incongruent with reality.
When someone’s “concern” leaves you wondering, “Where did that come from?” or “That doesn’t even make sense,” consider what the message reveals about the person delivering it.

Many disordered and coercively controlling individuals attempt to chip away at their partner’s confidence. They’ll criticize your appearance, skills, family, friends, and interests—virtually anything that matters to you.

Why? Because confident, healthy people are hard to control—they set boundaries, trust their own judgment, and exit toxic situations. People who doubt themselves are more likely to tolerate poor treatment and stay.

Until you emotionally detach, their words can feel devastating or linger in the corners of your mind. But as you detach, you begin to see the disordered nature of their behavior. Their insults stop landing and start looking like mounting evidence of their profound dysfunction.

Working with a psychology-trained divorce consultant can help you get there faster.
