Taylor Tomlinson included a whole segment in her recent comedy tour about estate planning. She warns her fans, "if you die without a will, your siblings aren't going to get your stuff -- like I thought -- but your parents are! So, even if you don't think you have much in the way of material goods, make a will if you don't want your parents to get your TV and your toaster. " (Maybe not an exact quote, but that was the idea.) Thanks, Taylor! I'm always happy to see popular culture references to estate planning.

I've always enjoyed finding probate and estate planning references in pop culture. I'm currently streaming the show "Fisk", from Australia, about a corporate lawyer who ends up working for a small-town probate firm.

I have wondered about this one, and some of the other words he mentions near the end!
And who put it there, anyway?

Something reminded me of this article today. I haven't bartered recently, though. Attorney Nisha Bhakta, when she was a law clerk, contributed to the original article, but that note was lost in this reprint.
In the opening scene of the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” — and in a later scene in the book by Harper Lee — client Walter Cunningham brings a bag of hickory nuts to lawyer Atticus Finch as payment for the latter’s help with the former’s entailment. Now that I am a lawyer myself, I under...

Enough time has passed that I have forgotten which client said this, but back in 2015, one of my clients said, "I love my grandchildren. They are my reward for not killing my kids."

A colleague pointed me to this great article on the music company BMI's website about things to consider if you own royalty rights.
It is a truism that most people, of any age, don’t like to think about their ultimate demise because it is either too distant or too near. Yet the fact of the matter is that estate planning is the only way to assure that those people whom you want to inherit…

Let me guide you on the estate planning path that’s right for you.
I entered law school with the intent of becoming a real estate lawyer, but soon after passing the bar realized that my true calling was estate planning and estate administration. Planning and administration – whether through probate or trusts – can be confusing. Often there is not a clear path that is “right;” or there may be many paths that will get my clients where they need to go. Most of my clients own real property, so I have opportunities to draw upon my 10+ year career in real estate development as I help my clients navigate through the often baffling tangle of laws and forms.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Dayton and my J.D. from California Western School of Law in San Diego. It wasn’t until I was in law school that I became an actual journalist; I have been a member of the editorial board of San Diego Lawyer Magazine since 2008 and have written several award-winning articles for the magazine.
While in college, I worked in the International Studies office and spent a summer studying abroad, discovering a love of travel that I now share with my spouse Jim and our two children. I enjoy hiking, especially in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and we target volcanic areas for our vacations, including Mt. Lassen, Calif.; Mt. Rainier, Wash.; Mt. Haleakala, Hawaii; Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland; and Thira, Greece. I have been a Girl Scout leader since 2004 and was the Lead Membership Organizer for the Mission Trails Service Unit #620 for about four years. I am a member of the California Bar Association, the San Diego County Bar Association, San Diego Equality Business Association (formerly the Greater San Diego Business Association), Probate Attorneys of San Diego, and the San Diego Press Club. I sing with my church choir for holidays and I sing regularly with the San Diego Festival Chorus.
I can help you:

plan for the continuation or closure of your business after your death
plan for the guardianship of your children after your death
plan for your own care and the management of your finances in the event of your incapacity (advance health care directive/“living will”/power of attorney for health care, power of attorney for finances)
