As a Texas Notary, I’ve been getting a lot of questions after seeing graphics like this online. Here’s what you should know for Texas voters-Right Now:

✅ You do NOT need
❌ A passport
❌ A birth certificate
❌ Marriage/divorce documents
❌ Notarized paperwork
to cast a ballot in Texas.

✔️ What does matter is that your photo ID and voter registration name substantially match. Small differences — hyphenated names, middle names, or marriage name changes — are often acceptable.

💍 Changed your last name?
Updating your voter registration ahead of time helps avoid stress on Election Day — but a name change alone does not automatically stop you from voting.

📌 Notary Tip:
Notaries do NOT control voter registration rules, but we can help you prepare documents properly and understand the process before deadlines.

Texas Boters-Let’s Clear This Up!

There’s a lot of confusion going around about name changes and voting — here are the facts for Texas.

🇨🇱 Texas does NOT require:
❌ An updated U.S. passport
❌ An updated birth certificate
❌ Marriage or divorce papers at the polls
❌ Notarized documents to vote

✅ What Texas DOES require:
Your voter registration name and photo ID must substantially match.

Accepted photo IDs in Texas include:
• Texas Driver License
• Texas Personal ID
• Texas Handgun License
• U.S. Military ID
• U.S. Passport (book or card)

💍 Married, divorced, or hyphenated name?
Minor differences (middle names, hyphens, one vs. two last names) are usually acceptable.

📝 If your name doesn’t match exactly, you may:
✔️ Sign a Reasonable Impediment Declaration
✔️ Vote provisionally and cure it later

📌 Bottom line:
Changing your last name does not automatically stop you from voting in Texas.

Important Texas Notary Law Updates – Effective January 1, 2026 (bilingual)

Texas notary laws have been updated to better protect the public and ensure professional, secure notarizations. Here’s what clients should know:

✔️ Personal appearance is required
All signers must appear in person or through approved online notarization at the time of notarization. Documents cannot be notarized if the signer is not present.

✔️ Notaries must complete state-required training
Texas now requires notaries to complete official education, ensuring accuracy, professionalism, and compliance with the law.

✔️ Notary records are retained for 10 years
Notaries are required to securely maintain records, providing protection and accountability if a document is ever questioned.

Transportation Security Administration - TSA recently announced that starting February 1, 2026, air travelers without a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID will be charged a $45 fee to use an alternative identity verification system (TSA Confirm.ID) to establish identity at security checkpoints. If you don’t have a REAL ID, remember that a passport card or passport book are both accepted REAL ID alternatives for domestic travel and can help you avoid this fee. Just remember that the $30 passport card is not sufficient for international air travel- you'll need a passport book for that. Learn more at travel.state.gov/passportcard.

At the SA Hope Center, we understand that many families in our community are being affected by recent changes to SNAP benefits. While we are not a designated SNAP relief agency, we recognize the growing need and want to do what we can to provide support with our limited resources. Our commitment to serving you with compassion and dignity remains unwavering.

In response to the increased need, we will continue offering our existing programs and services. While we remain open for walk-in services Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., we encourage community members to seek additional support by reaching out to the following community agencies:

✅ How to find your nearest polling place
• Use the official state tool at Texas Secretary of State’s website: “Where’s my Polling Place?” VoteTexas.gov you can enter your name, county, date of birth, and ZIP code. 
• For your county (Bexar County, Texas) you can check the voter registration/ polling location search tool.  Bexar.org
• Polls on Election Day are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. statewide in Texas. 
• You will need to present an acceptable photo ID, unless you qualify for an exemption. 

VoteTexas.gov is your go-to resource for voter registration, election dates, polling locations, and more. Get the info you need to make your vote count.
