Did you receive unemployment benefits in 2020? According to the American Rescue Plan Act, the first $10,200 of unemployment income received in 2020 will be tax exempt. If you have already filed your 2020 taxes, you should not attempt to amend them just yet. The IRS will provide additional guidance to taxpayers who have already filed.

Tax Day for individuals extended to May 17: Treasury, IRS extend filing and payment deadline

WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced today that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. The IRS will be providing formal guidance in the coming days.
Individual taxpayers can also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021, without any penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. This postponement applies to individual taxpayers, including individuals who pay self-employment tax. Penalties, interest, and additions to tax will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of May 17, 2021.

Most taxpayers should have received income documents near the end of January, including:
• Forms W-2, Wage and Tax Statement
• Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income
• Form 1099-INT, Interest Income
• Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation
• Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments; like unemployment compensation or state tax refund
If you have not received the needed forms to file your taxes, you should contact the employer, payer or issuing agency and request the missing documents. This also applies for those who received an incorrect W-2 or Form 1099.

Where my money at??
By now you have probably heard that the third round of Economic Impact Payments will start reaching taxpayers over the next week or so. In general, most people will get $1,400 for themselves and $1,400 for each of their qualifying dependents claimed on their tax return. Most of these payments will be by direct deposit, but some will also arrive by mail in the form of a check or debit card, so be sure to look at ALL your mail. You can also check the “Get My Payment” tool on IRS.gov to see the payment status of the third stimulus payment. If you currently owe federal debts or back taxes, don’t worry, under the new law, an EIP3 cannot be offset to pay various past-due federal debts or back taxes.
