The Richmond Community Legal Fund was born out of our faith that we could fight the rising tide of fascism and win. This spring, our fund turned one year old. Our team, our movement, and our fight for freedom is much older, and has much farther to go.

In the past year we have covered nearly half a million dollars in legal costs for members of our community facing immigration and civil rights charges. We have paid bonds for our neighbors, we have rushed funds to families in need, we have made critical legal representation accessible for people who would otherwise face the state without a defense. We are fighting back, and we are making a difference.

Join us on June 25th at Studio 23 for music, food, and a testament to community resilience.

Since Saturday’s announcement, we’ve already raised over $7,500! On Saturday, we approved two urgent legal fees requests. This week, we hope to cover two bonds totalling over $13,000 and one attorney fee of more than $8,000. That’s just ONE WEEK of asks. With this cash match, we hope to cover requests for a full month.

We know we can do this: Of the nearly half a million dollars we have distributed since we launched a year ago, almost all has come from community members and local businesses – small dollar donations from folks like those who marched this weekend across the country. Even in the face of rising grocery bills and gas prices, skyrocketing health insurance premiums and tuition bills, and inaccessible housing and childcare, we give what we can to protect each other.

We will continue to move money as quickly as we can, but like many organizations that do this work we are struggling to match the need.

Thank you all for making that possible through donations and fundraising. This fund is the work of many many people, and our core team can’t say enough how much we appreciate all of you.

On December 17th at 6:45 AM, eight ICE and DHS agents apprehended a Richmond resident on his way to work, smashing the windows on his van, and pulling him violently from the car.

Concerned neighbors filmed the agents and were threatened with arrest, but stood their ground until ICE left the scene. The ICE field agents subsequently kidnapped a second individual in the same raid.

While the state continues its reign of ICE terror on Richmond neighborhoods like Southwood Apartments, it is also bringing us together to get organized around anti-repression and smash back.

We are raising funds to provide material support to both families affected by this raid. Donate today to support this community.
