When do you need to get a guardianship for an aging parent?
It is time to consider guardianship in New Jersey when your parent becomes incapacitated due to severe cognitive decline, dementia, or a medical event and can no longer make safe decisions about their own health or finances. Because guardianship strips away a person's rights, it is treated by the courts as a last resort when less restrictive options (like a Power of Attorney) are already unavailable.
