We need to figure out something that bridges the gap between the juvenile legal system's maximum punishment (up to age 21) and the adult legal system's minimum punishment (at least 25 years up to life in prison without parole). Judges are left to treat obvious children as adults because they don't have a better option in front of them--a middle ground that could acknowledge the transience of youth while not condemning young people to decades or life in prison without hope.

A Maine man whose yearslong plight in the Maine State Prison’s isolation unit was chronicled in a 2021 Bangor Daily News investigation has settled a lawsuit against the state for $250,000.

Zachary Swain accused the state prison officials of violating his constitutional rights by subjecting him to an “endless cycle of punishment” instead of treating his mental health issues.
