What is a squishy, and why does my child need eleven of them?

If you have an elementary schooler, you've met these. They're in pockets, on backpack clips, traded at recess. If you've only met them by having one pressed into your hand with instructions to squeeze it and report back — this post is for you.

We've given in. There's a shelf of them in the shop now, chosen almost entirely by our seven-year-old daughter. She went through the wholesaler's catalogue properly and has opinions. She's the target customer, so her judgement beats ours.

On the blog we've written up her five picks, plus the thing we found genuinely interesting: the slowness in a slow-rise squishy is engineered. Foam patents for this material describe using deliberately tiny amounts of catalyst and surfactant so the rise time runs past ninety seconds. It's not a gimmick — someone tuned that.

Also covered, because it matters more than the fun part: the safety warnings differ per item. Several of the foam ones are labelled by their maker as not for children under six. The bead-filled squeeze balls carry a choking-hazard warning and specify adult supervision. If you're buying for a classroom or a party bag with a wide age range, tell us the youngest age involved and we'll steer you.

One honest tip for anyone shopping online: these are very hard to judge from a photograph. A buyer review of one of ours reads "much smaller than I expected it to be for the price that I paid" — and they were right, it's about an inch and a third. Which is a good argument for a shelf.

We bought a handful of each rather than a deep stack, so the selection shifts. Come have a squeeze.

The festive season looks like a shopping list. For anything personalised, it behaves like a production schedule.

A card has to be designed, proofed and printed. A shirt has to be sized and made. A basket has to be built before it can be given. All of that takes time December doesn't have.

What we make here: custom shirts, hoodies, totes, mugs and drinkware · printed holiday and greeting cards from your own design or photo · calendars, ornaments and enlargements · gift baskets put together for whoever's hard to buy for. Plus the ordinary things people forget until the last week — banners, lamination, binding, gift cards.

The National Retail Federation reckons about two in five holiday shoppers start before November, mostly to spread the cost and avoid the rush. For anything made, there's a better reason: a proof to approve, a correction, sometimes a second proof, then production. Every one of those is quick in October and impossible in the third week of December.

Three things that save you a trip: bring the photo at full size (not one that's been through a messaging app), a rough count, and sizes for anything worn.

Most people need a notary about once every few years, and almost always with a deadline attached.

A few things worth knowing before you come in:

• Bring current photo ID. An expired one is the most common reason someone gets turned away.
• Bring the document unsigned unless you've been told otherwise — some acts have to be signed in front of the notary.
• Everyone signing has to be physically there, each with their own ID.

And one thing we can't do: a notary in California isn't a lawyer and can't give legal advice — we can't tell you which document you need or what a clause means. If that's what you're after, you need an attorney, and we'll say so rather than take your money.

There are around 4.4 million notaries in the US, so they're not scarce. What's scarce is finding one at 4pm on a Friday when the bank has closed. We do walk-ins at the counter, and we'll travel to you — hospital, care home, or your office — by appointment. Evenings and weekends too, if you arrange it ahead.
