Birth injury families do this every single day.

Have courage.
Try again.
Adapt.
Advocate.
Keep going even when exhausted.

One of the things I admire most about the parents I represent is that they learn to live in two realities at once: grief for what was lost and fierce hope for what is still possible.

And somehow, they still show up for therapies, appointments, school meetings, and bedtime stories with extraordinary love and resilience.

The world sees the diagnosis.
I see the courage it takes to keep moving forward anyway. 💚

I’m honestly really touched by this recognition from What’s Up Annapolis.

What makes this one especially meaningful is that it came from actual community members and peers. When I told my law firm I had won, they were completely surprised—which means they didn’t nominate me, campaign for me, or even know it was happening.

The difference really matters to me.

Professional awards can sometimes feel transactional or heavily curated, so knowing that people in my local community thought of me on their own is genuinely humbling.

I’m still relatively new to Annapolis, and I think part of why this hit me emotionally is because it made me realize people not only know I’m here, but they see the work I’m trying to do.

For that, I’m incredibly grateful.

Effective parenting often means fighting against deeply rooted tendencies. This is a tale as old as time and I have done this countless times with my kids, partners, friends, family...

Like saying “I’m fine” when I’m clearly not.

They pick up on it immediately. Kids always do.

And when I deny it, I’m asking them to ignore their own read of the room.

That’s not the lesson I want to teach.

Part of my job as a birth injury lawyer in medical malpractice cases is translating complicated medical terms to non-doctors.

Today’s definition: **Amniotic fluid.**

Amniotic fluid is the yellowish-clear liquid that surrounds an unborn baby inside the uterus during pregnancy. It cushions the baby, helps maintain a stable temperature, and allows the baby's body to move and develop normally.

Throughout labor and delivery, the amount and appearance of amniotic fluid can give doctors important information about how the baby is doing. Both too much and too little are problems for different reason. Your doctor or midwife will monitor through ultrasound imaging.

When someone says that their "water broke" this is what leaks out.

Understanding the words doctors use can help families ask questions, understand care, and support their baby’s development. This is only meant to be educational.

Life outside the courtroom is full of funny imperfections. Embrace them. Laughter really is the best medicine for most anything hard to deal with- even deposition preparations. I miss these moments when I am on the road.

Many parents don’t know labor and delivery terms until after they are already pregnant and then nod along pretending to know when they are embarrassed to ask.

That stops here. Knowledge empowers people to get better care. What labor and delivery terms would you like to see defined?

Today’s definition: **Umbilical cord.**

This connects the baby to the placenta during pregnancy and labor. It contains three blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood and nutrients from the placenta to the baby and return waste products back to the mother’s circulation.

Throughout pregnancy and labor, the umbilical cord is the only way the unborn baby get oxygen and nutrients.

After birth, the cord is clamped and cut once the baby begins breathing and circulating blood independently.

When a baby takes its first breath, its entire blood circulation system stops and reverses direction.

Understanding the words doctors use can help families ask questions, understand care, and support their baby’s development.

Challenging assignment? Bring it on! Nothing a little out-of-the-box thinking won't fix. "She thought she could, so she did" is the type of energy I bring to each client's case.

It's a myth that plaintiffs are looking for some kind of fast track to wealth. Law suits are not quick or easy and honestly, most people want to avoid conflict. The people who reach out to me have been through something unimaginable and are brave enough to speak out.

My cases are against giant corporations with what seems like infinite amounts of time and money to litigate. My feisty, can-do attitude has helped hold these companies accountable to the tune of over $75M in verdicts and settlements, so far.

Just a mom so proud of her son’s hard work, drive, and creativity. He continues to impress me.

Today’s definition: **Placenta.**

The placenta is the temporary organ shaped like a pancake that grows during pregnancy to deliver oxygen and nutrients from the mother’s blood to the unborn baby through the umbilical cord. It acts as a filtration system throughout pregnancy.

During labor and delivery, the placenta continues to be the baby’s lifeline for oxygen-rich blood until the baby is born.

After the birth of the baby, the placenta is pushed out of the body as no longer needed. This is what they mean by "the after birth".

Understanding the words doctors use can help families ask questions, understand care, and support their baby’s development. I want to make birth feel less mystifying and overwhelming by educating.
