Phoenix Parent Files Civil Lawsuit Against BASIS Phoenix
Central Alleging False Arrest, Retaliation, and Negligence
Phoenix, AZ — [08/21/2025] — Phoenix resident Laki Syph has filed a civil lawsuit against
BASIS Phoenix Central, its leadership, and its parent company BASIS.ed, alleging false
arrest, retaliatory conduct, emotional trauma, and gross negligence stemming from a March
4, 2025, incident involving his daughter’s safety.
According to the complaint, Syph’s daughter was unaccounted for after school dismissal,
and BASIS staff refused to notify police despite repeated requests. When Syph sought
answers, school officials later filed reports that led to his wrongful arrest on Father’s Day,
June 15, 2025.
Although the charges were dismissed, the arrest caused Syph to suffer medical harm due to
interrupted diabetes treatment, financial losses, reputational damage, and lasting emotional
trauma for him and his family. The complaint also alleges that BASIS staff submitted
retaliatory and false reports to both law enforcement and child protective services, all of
which were ultimately dismissed as unfounded.

The lawsuit seeks $3,250,000 in compensatory damages plus punitive damages, citing:
• False arrest and wrongful imprisonment
• Emotional distress and reputational harm
• Financial losses including bail, emergency loans, and missed work
• Disruption to his children’s education and family life
