Gentrification is real and in 2020 land rights are not always respected when huge profits are on the table. This leaves struggling neighborhoods vulnerable to skilled real estate investors that simply target, buy up, and redistribute property for personal gain. More often, these tactics leave Black and brown neighborhoods open to huge community shifts further exposing the wide disparity between wealth and homeownership in our nation.
Real estate has value. So much so, voting rights were directly tied to it. Some of our nation’s most powerful political figures found questionable ways to acquire it.
Even to this day, our children’s education is determined by real estate. Simply ask anyone what zip code they live in and like a bar code, you can determine the quality of the child’s school district budget, school facility, education programs, and teachers’ credentials. And we fight to move into these areas in hopes that it could dramatically shape our children’s/family’s future. However, It’s not enough to physically live in a community, you need to OWN it. WE’RE learning that the hard way in our own neighborhood.
