Last week, I received a frantic phone call from a past client. She was headed to the hospital because her Uncle was admitted earlier that day and they are now just finding out that because he and his significant other are not married, the SO cannot make any decisions for his medical care. They were needing a Medical POA (Power of Attorney) ASAP and asked if I could coordinate with our attorney partners to have one drawn up that evening. She disclosed that he was in a medically induced coma and that they planned on bringing him out of it around 6pm that night and if we can have a POA ready for when he wakes up. Since no one knew what the outcome would be, they also would need a FINANCIAL POA in the case his hospital stay became long term. Unfortunately in this circumstance, we could not assist them as her Uncle was admitted to the hospital, under a physicians care, and medicated. He was in no condition to sign legal documents. Through strong prayers the Uncle was able to recover and go home in the next few days. They reached out to say they want to get moving on the Uncle's estate planning for a relapse was possible in the future.
