Northern California, I know itās hard to believe, but we are still in wildfire season.
PSPS shutoffs. Fires. And in a few weeks, the anniversary of the Camp Fire. Every year, this time of year sits a little heavier on my chest.
Iām a wildfire survivor. I still remember the panic of trying to decide what mattered in a matter of minutes.
I made sure to grab the shoes for my sisterās wedding. But my clothes? I grabbed random things from my closet that I didnāt even like. Things I never wore. And when youāve lost your sense of normal, putting on clothes that donāt feel like you hurts more than youād think.
You donāt think clearly in that moment. Nobody does. Thatās why Iām asking you to think about it now, while you can.
Swipe through for what I learned the hard way, as a survivor and as an estate planning attorney:
1ļøā£ Just go. Donāt wait.
2ļøā£ Have a plan.
3ļøā£ Keep a go bag ready.
4ļøā£ Grab the clothes you actually wear, even if itās the laundry hamper.
5ļøā£ Review and update your insurance. Now, not after.
6ļøā£ Protect your estate plan so your family can find it.
Your house can be rebuilt. Your things can be replaced. You canāt.
Please donāt wait until the smoke is in the sky to be ready.
