What’s happening in Texas is absolutely gutting. As a parent. As a teacher. As a *human,* I have wept many tears thinking of the families whose loved ones were taken in an instant.

In moments like this, two things must be true: we must weep with those who weep. We must resist the urge to be fake experts from afar, assigning blame we are not equipped to ascribe.

What families need in this moment is not a general public squabbling amongst themselves. They need to know they are not alone.

Imagine you’re driving down the road and you happen upon a terrible car accident. Some people are killed, others are injured. As the victims’ family begins to arrive, would that be an appropriate time to begin a loud argument with another bystander who also did not witness the accident about who is at fault?

Or would now be the appropriate time to get people to the hospital? To help families pick up the pieces?

The same is true here. This is not the time or venue for those of us who were not there to argue or try to score political points.

The second thing that must be true is that we cannot let our inability to solve everything keep us from doing what we can, where we are, with the resources available to us.

For some of us, that means donating to groups that are equipped to help. For others, it might mean volunteering on the ground. For everyone, it can mean refusing to engage in things that cause further harm to the families whose babies have died.

And to every person affected: I am sending you my love. ❤️
