California is one step closer to taking meaningful action against the artificial stone silicosis epidemic.

A new Capital & Main article highlights California’s move toward banning the fabrication of crystalline silica artificial stone countertops, products linked to a devastating rise in accelerated silicosis among stone fabrication workers. This incurable and fatal lung disease is caused by inhaling toxic crystalline silica dust released when these materials are cut, shaped, or polished.

For too many workers and families, the cost of these countertops has already been life-changing. Safer alternatives exist, and action is urgently needed to stop more preventable illnesses and loss.

We encourage you to read the full article and continue sharing information about why this ban matters. (Link in comments)

In the last few weeks, the numbers have already increased.

562 confirmed cases of artificial stone silicosis.
58 lung transplants.
31 deaths.

And those numbers are undercounted.

While the debate continues, more workers continue to get sick from a disease that is entirely preventable.

Listen to the workers. Share their stories. Demand action.

Occupational illness and injury can leave lasting effects that go far beyond the physical.

A serious diagnosis or workplace injury can change daily routines, affect a person’s sense of security, and take a real toll on emotional wellbeing. The stress of treatment, lost income, uncertainty, and major life changes can impact both workers and the people who love them.

Mental health matters. Supporting injured workers and those living with occupational disease means recognizing the full weight of what they carry.

Share this post to help shine a light on the mental and emotional toll of workplace harm.

🎙 From Dust to Verdict: Episode 14 🎙

The workers finally spoke. And their message was devastatingly consistent.

Countertop fabrication workers diagnosed with fatal silicosis worked in certified shops. They used water. They wore masks. They followed the OSHA rules. And still, they got sick.

As discussed in Episode 14, workers, doctors, nurses, and public health experts testified before the Cal/OSHA Standards Board that this epidemic is not the result of a few “bad actors.” The evidence continues to point to the uniquely toxic nature of crystalline silica artificial stone itself.

At the center of this episode is a growing question: if workers are still developing fatal disease despite following the regulations, how many more lives will be lost before meaningful action is taken?

California can help stop the artificial stone silicosis epidemic.

On Thursday, May 21 at 10 AM, the Cal/OSHA Standards Board will vote on whether to ban deadly crystalline silica artificial stone slabs and support safer alternatives like recycled glass and natural stone.

Countertop workers are developing fatal silicosis from fabricating high silica artificial stone. This disease is preventable, and workers’ lives are at stake.

This is the final opportunity for public input before the Board votes. Take action by joining the hearing, raising your hand during public comment, and urging the Board to vote YES on the ban.

Not every promising treatment leads to better outcomes.

A recent clinical trial studying nintedanib as a maintenance therapy for pleural mesothelioma found it did not improve survival or delay disease progression. The results highlight a critical reality: even well-designed therapies may fall short in real-world care.

The study also reinforces the growing role of immunotherapy and combination treatments in shaping the future of mesothelioma care.

As research evolves, patients and families are still facing the impact of this disease today.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed after asbestos exposure, you may have legal options.

🎙 From Dust to Verdict: Episode 13 🎙

The clock is ticking. And the number keeps rising.

More than 500 California workers are already living with fatal disease caused by crystalline silica artificial stone. Yet the product remains on the market.

As discussed in Episode 13, this is no longer a question of awareness or available solutions. Safer alternatives already exist. The question is how many more workers will be diagnosed before meaningful action is taken.

In a recent Corporate Crime Reporter interview, Brayton Purcell LLP attorney James Nevin warned that artificial stone silicosis is “asbestos all over again.” Workers cutting, grinding, and polishing engineered stone countertops can inhale dangerous crystalline silica dust, leading to irreversible lung disease, disability, lung transplants, and death.

Many of those affected are young workers, often in small family-run shops, who were never fully warned about the risks. Lawsuits are now surging nationwide as workers and families seek accountability from manufacturers.

“This litigation is only beginning,” Nevin said. “The human toll is staggering, and accountability is long overdue.”

Brayton Purcell LLP is proud to stand with workers harmed by toxic exposures and to fight for safer workplaces.
