This week at Rutgers Law School, the Rutgers Center for Gender Justice and Law, The Rutgers Center for Corporate Law and Governance, and the Societal Security and Digital Identities Project based at the Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) held a working conference focused on coerced debt, identity theft, and financial exploitation.

Yesterday, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice's Jessica Kitson, Laura Russell (The Legal Aid Society), and Andrew Rothman (Rutgers Law Associates Fellowship Program) presented on “Coerced Debt and Domestic Violence: Strategies,” covering topics such as building a practice in domestic violence prosecution adjacent to the American law school; coerced debt, domestic violence, and divorce; and the unique vulnerabilities for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking and promising legislative advances.

The conference is yet another reminder of how much work remains to address the financial exploitation of groups at risk and the exploitation and injustice around gender, age, ethnicity, and disability; the conference also showed there are several talented and dedicated professionals in New Jersey and beyond doing something about it.
